Hyundai’s 2027 Tucson Grows Boxier With Extra Cabin Space and Hybrid Muscle

Hyundai parked the fifth-generation Tucson against the Manhattan skyline today, and the shape alone explains why the company is calling this its boldest SUV. Soft curves from the last model give way to flat door skins, squared fender flares, and a stance that reads closer to a trail rig than a mall crossover. Hyundai labels the look Art of Steel. Full-width light bars run across the nose and tail, the daytime lamps sit low in a darkened cluster, and the rear lamps are prism-shaped pieces that stick out from the body. An optional Micro Pixel setup packs 25,600 individual LEDs for sharper beams and simple light animations.

Buyers in North America, Korea, and Australia receive the long-wheelbase body, which increases the vehicle’s length by 60mm (now 4,700mm), width by 40mm (now 1,905mm), height by 20mm (now 1,685mm), and wheelbase by 30mm to 2,785mm (109.6 inches). All of this extra metal results in increased space for your rear legs and around 41.7 cubic feet of cargo in the back when the seats are up. The rear doors now swing out to 83 degrees, ten degrees wider than previously, which is quite useful when trying to fit a car seat or dog crate through the opening. Meanwhile, Europe will have to deal with the shorter-wheelbase variant of the same design.

Two additional outdoor trims take this concept to the next level. XRT features extra-wide cladding, a stronger bumper, and some very amazing skid-plate designs. The XRT Pro model, aimed at North Americans, increases ground clearance from 180mm to 210mm, equips the vehicle with all-terrain tires, and adds those super-useful front recovery hooks, as well as better approach and departure angles. It has a smart system on board called sophisticated Terrain Assist, which reads the surface in real time and gives you a score indicating how likely the truck is to become stuck. The paint colors are also more robust, with Ranger Green, Kodiak Blue, Driftwood Gray, and Red Rock Orange, all available in pearl or, in some cases, a good matte finish.

Inside, the redesigned dash is divided into a sleek top band and a deep, open tray for all your accessories. A 9.9 inch driver display sits proudly at the top, with a typical 12.9 inch screen in the center, but if you want to go all out, you can have a 17 inch display instead. Both screens run the new Pleos Connect on Android Automotive, which allows you to install your favorite apps for maps, music, and gaming, as well as receive updates wirelessly. Gleo, the voice assistant, can handle simple spoken queries; there’s no need to become sophisticated.

Meanwhile, climate and audio controls keep the old-style buttons and knobs behind the screen, where they are conveniently accessible. The shifter switches to shift-by-wire, freeing up console space for a pair of dual 15 watt wireless phone chargers and a secret storage tray beneath. You can even have super-sporty Ergo Motion front seats that use seven air cells for lumbar and bolster massage, or in shorter-wheelbase cars, a one-button relaxation seat that allows you to recline in style, and yes, the rear seatbacks have their own 100-watt USB-C plugs.

Gas models in the United States get a 1.6-liter turbo four with 184 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, mated with an eight-speed automatic and either front- or all-wheel drive, rated for up to 28 mpg combined. The hybrid receives the same turbo four but adds two motors for 233 horsepower and around 280 lb-ft of torque, a reasonable 0-60 time of 8.5 seconds, and up to 42 mpg combined in front-drive form, which is four miles better than the old all-wheel drive only hybrid. Towing capacity has increased to 3,000 pounds. A plug-in variant, available in a few chosen markets, produces approximately 288-292 horsepower, travels 50 miles on electricity alone, and reaches 60 mph in 7.9 seconds. Early indications from the United States imply that the plug-in model will not be available at launch. The new Tucson will be available in Korea later in 2026, while North American dealers should expect SE, SEL, Limited, and XRT Pro trims in early 2027, though prices have yet to be set.
