Op-Ed: No, AI control isn’t a ‘globalist hoax’ and all this babble is wasting time
The sad little collection of underachieving prokaryotes sometimes referred to as POTUS is reading from the same script as 2018. Back then he said COVID was a hoax. Then got himself vaccinated against it the minute the vaccines were available after supporting the anti-vax drivel. Millions died.
In a speech to the UN that could give megalomania a bad reputation, he condescended to include AI control in a directionless tirade. He described a petition to the UN to manage AI as a “globalist hoax”.
The globalist element referred to includes Australia, Canada, and the EU. It also includes all the major US AI players who have a lot to lose if AI management fails at any level or causes major liabilities.
The use of “globalist” as a term relating to AI would be hilarious if it wasn’t a global problem. In the abandoned antique chicken coops in which these speeches are written, “global” means anything or anyone external.
The impending mass integration of this shoddy, skanky, half-baked, pretentious, sententious, inexcusably mismanaged tech into global networks is global. If it fails, it’ll be a very expensive global disaster.
Looks like China would like a word
Apparently, the spokes-thing for America the Obsolete didn’t think of that.
It’s ironic that this is the stated US position on AI within days of Xi’s visit to discuss exactly the same subject. As the US throws trillions at anything vaguely AI-related, the credibility gap is widening.
There’s not even the suggestion of a doubt who’s holding the cards in this meeting. China is approaching AI, automation, and robotics systematically and in macroeconomic terms. Their AI products are ready to ship. The US is simply doing nepo deals with itself as usual while actual market performance borders on the ludicrous.
This meeting could well define the immediate future of AI in the real world. Regulated vs. barely regulated is the issue. International agreements are the essential element in running AI globally.
Any failure to reach agreement between China and the US would be extremely destructive. Given a choice between US AI and Chinese AI, the world faces a “whatever” deployment scenario from the US and Chinese systematic deployment. It can barely be dignified as being described as a choice.
This is a recipe for dangerous inconsistency on all levels of technology. It also means that cohesive management of AI fundamentals would be effectively impossible. The slapdash US regulatory environment wouldn’t work in a Stone Age dunghill, let alone this world.
Market brutality, explained
The markets can bury the AI speculation boom overnight. The AI Bubble mystique is giving way to pullbacks. The pullbacks on data centres in particular are more than unambiguous. They’re an expression of real investment power. A lot of capital is simply not playing.
On stock markets, where drivel that can’t be turned into hard cash isn’t very popular, corrections are inevitable. A few trillion dollars’ worth of drivel could be revalued very suddenly and very sharply. This is what happens when you undermine your own credibility.
The Anthropic IPO will be interesting. The markets are looking at a unique type of investment. They have very little reliable information, largely thanks to the hype. They’re nothing like AI experts, as they keep proving. They can’t assess AI in any context other than hard value of stocks.
The current level of shabby “er, ah, um” information provided to the investment sector regarding the realities of AI can’t cut it. It is simply not good enough to try to pass off meaningless blurb as market information.
A trillion-dollar holding can be gutted instantly. The markets can also cut the prices of AI stocks and simply buy in at a discount after beggaring the guys holding those stocks. It’s a reliable way of making money out of unreliable stocks.
Especially those who can’t even manage information about themselves. Are we feeling smart yet?
Wasting the time of 8.3 billion people
Real world AI can’t be a guessing game. Never mind the doom. This tech can genuinely screw up anything. Routine tasks are being performed abysmally or worse. Everything from basic essentials like food and water to finance and advanced tech requires AI to work reliably.
Let’s try a scenario:
There’s a sudden economic crash. Prices are out of control. Stocks evaporate on a scale that makes 1929 and 2008 look positively Disney. Capital holdings dissolve instantly. Billionaires become paupers. Nobody can pay bills. Food prices are insane. It has happened many times before.
What will the world have to manage this mess? The same years-long AI idiocy that caused it. A decade’s worth of damage can happen in seconds. Time is the critical factor in this environment. The daily needs of 8.3 billion people will be left hanging. All because some fools can’t make a rational decision and for no other reason.
The anti-regulation morons seem to ignore the fact that every single thing they own or have ever seen in their lives is regulated. Regulation protects their ownership and gives their own rights enforceable legal status. AI has to be regulated on the same basis.
Do your damn jobs for once.
