Toyota Gazoo Racing put the GR KART on sale in Japan on September 10 for 385,000 yen, about $2,500 including tax, as a closed-course machine meant to get children and families onto a track without the usual pile of extra cost. Each unit comes from the small Gamagori GR KART Workshop in Aichi Prefecture, where staff apply Toyota Production System methods to a product far smaller than any passenger car. Official goals match a long-standing wish from chairman Akio Toyoda, who has said motorsports should be as easy to pick up as baseball or soccer.

The kart is inexpensive enough to get you started in a hobby and keep you going. It has a 215cc four-stroke gasoline engine with a diaphragm carburetor and no float chamber construction. That design helps to decrease the amount of fuel-level swings that can occur when putting the kart under any kind of load, and it’s paired with a primer pump, so starting is a breeze. Best of all, this engine features a self-charging battery that stays inside it, eliminating the need to keep a separate battery pack charged. As for power? For the time being, however, it remains a secret. The kart weighs 83kgs when it leaves the curb with oil in the tank and the fuel tank empty.

The kart’s dimensions have been kept tight, 1,820mm long, 1,160mm wide, and 670mm high, with a 1,045mm wheelbase to be exact, which is just about perfect for us, especially since you can easily slide it into the back of a Toyota Noah or a Voxy minivan without having to disassemble the entire thing, which means no trailer is required for most family trips to a circuit, which is a huge bonus. Oh, and there are fixtures available to keep it from shifting around in the cargo area if you need them.

You can take it home and set it up the same way, with an oil catch tank and a fuel-filler orientation that helps to stop leaks, so you don’t have to drain the gasoline or engine oil before standing the kart upright, which is great news for apartment owners with limited floor space. It’s also particularly driver-friendly, since the seating position can be modified to allow drivers ranging in height from 135 to 185cm to share a single chassis, which is ideal for families or ensuring that the same machine is passed from child to parent in between sessions. If you want to take things a little more seriously, you can add a separate weight box that contains up to 15kg of ballast for race-day balance and includes a transponder mount.

With a belt drive and automatic tensioner instead of a chain, there is no greasy mess and no belt modifications to make, allowing beginners to focus on driving rather than fiddling. The stainless-steel rear axle shaft and metal fuel lines resist rust and gasoline damage, ensuring a longer service life. There are also some very important safety features to note, such as a bumper designed to prevent another kart from climbing up in front of it in a collision, stopper pins that keep a rear hub from coming off, a seat surface for resting hands while climbing in or out, protection from the hot muffler, and a throttle layout that prevents the throttle from sticking open.

New owners can get started with a companion app that walks them through the basics and provides incredibly useful setup and driving instructions. Every purchase also includes a digital driver’s passport, which allows you to access any of the program’s tracks without the need for a separate license.
