AI is reshaping international education as students pivot toward technology-focused degrees
Artificial intelligence is transforming industries at a remarkable pace, from healthcare and finance to manufacturing and transportation. As organizations adapt to automation, machine learning, and data-driven decision making, a parallel shift is occurring within higher education. Students planning to study abroad are increasingly choosing degrees that combine technical expertise with long-term career resilience.
Recent data suggest that the traditional hierarchy of international study preferences is being redefined. While business schools and MBA programs remain popular, growing numbers of students are turning towards artificial intelligence, data science, computer science, engineering, and analytics as they prepare for careers in an increasingly digital economy.
According to the latest Open Doors report from the Institute of International Education (IIE), 57 percent of international students in the U.S. are enrolled in STEM-related disciplines. Mathematics and computer science account for 26 percent of international enrolments, while engineering represents 18 percent, making technology-focused disciplines the dominant study area among overseas students.
AI changes the calculation
Historically, many international students viewed an MBA as the most reliable pathway to career advancement and global employment opportunities. However, the emergence of generative AI and the increasing integration of automation into everyday business operations appear to be changing that equation.
According to student lender Prodigy Finance, applicants preparing for 2026 admissions are increasingly choosing specialized master’s programs in artificial intelligence, data science, and business analytics. Rather than replacing business education entirely, many students are seeking to combine technical and managerial competencies into a single career strategy.
Sonal Kapoor, Global Chief Business Officer at Prodigy Finance, tells Digital Journal that students are prioritizing technical capabilities before adding broader business skills.
“Five years ago, an MBA was the default choice for almost every international applicant we spoke to. Now we’re seeing far more students apply for a master’s in AI, or a data science or analytics programme, sometimes alongside a general management degree rather than instead of it,” Kapoor explains.
The trend reflects a growing belief that future career success will depend upon understanding emerging technologies rather than simply managing organizations that use them.
Technical skills become a strategic asset
From a labour market perspective, the shift is logical. Organizations globally are investing heavily in AI-enabled systems, predictive analytics, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and digital transformation initiatives. Professional roles increasingly require employees to understand how data is generated, analysed, interpreted, and applied. As a result, technical literacy is becoming a competitive advantage beyond the traditional technology sector.
The change is especially noticeable among students from India and several African nations, where demand for technology-oriented postgraduate education continues to rise. India remains the largest source of international students in the United States, with more than 363,000 students enrolled during the 2024-25 academic year.
Importantly, today’s students have witnessed firsthand the effects of digital disruption. Many have seen industries transformed by apps, automation, remote working technologies, and AI-powered services. Consequently, they are evaluating degrees not only by immediate employability but also by their relevance a decade or more into the future.
Sustainability, healthcare and policy are evolving too
Although STEM disciplines dominate growth areas, students are not abandoning other fields. In this context, Prodigy Finance reports increasing interest in environmental science, healthcare, law, and public policy programs. However, these disciplines are increasingly being viewed through a technological lens.
Environmental science programs now incorporate climate modelling, geospatial analytics, and sustainability technologies. Healthcare degrees are embracing digital health systems, AI-assisted diagnostics, and health informatics. Public policy programs increasingly focus on technology governance, cybersecurity regulation, and AI ethics. This reflects a broader labour market reality: technology is no longer confined to the technology sector.
Instead, digital capabilities are being embedded across nearly every profession. For employers, this convergence creates opportunities to recruit graduates who understand both technical systems and the human, regulatory, or societal contexts in which those systems operate.
The growing popularity of AI and data science programs also creates challenges. Many leading technology-focused master’s programs carry tuition costs comparable to traditional MBA degrees. For international students, particularly those funding education in foreign currencies, rising costs remain a major concern.
Students often rely on a combination of scholarships, personal savings, family support, and educational financing. The economics of international education therefore remain closely linked to global currency fluctuations, labour market expectations, and post-graduation salary prospects.
Kapoor argues that this financial commitment reflects confidence in the long-term value of technical education. “When you look at what students are actually applying to study, you get an honest picture of the future they are preparing for. Right now that picture has AI, data and sustainability at the centre of it,” she notes.
The choices students make today provide an early indicator of where global labour markets may be heading. If current trends continue, future cohorts of international graduates will arrive with a blend of technical expertise, analytical capabilities, and business understanding. This combination is likely to be particularly valuable as organizations navigate increasingly complex technological environments.
