Tesla Model Y Leaves Ford Police Interceptor Far Behind on the Drag Strip

Bandimere Speedway in the Colorado mountains once hosted plenty of memorable runs before it shut down for good. High up at nearly 5,800 feet, the thin air tests every vehicle that rolls through the gates. On one recent afternoon a stock Tesla Model Y pulled into the staging lane next to a fully equipped Ford Police Interceptor Utility from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Both drivers lined up for a clean quarter-mile sprint, lights flashing and siren blaring from the Ford as the green lights flashed.

The Ford Police Interceptor Utility is used by departments across the country because it can withstand lengthy shifts, difficult roads, and high cargo without complaint. This example has all of the regular pursuit gear, additional cooling systems, strengthened sections, and equipment racks, bringing its curb weight near to 5,000 pounds. Under the hood, Ford’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 produced 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. It launched with all-wheel drive, but the increased mass and altitude limited the engine’s performance.

Next to it sat the Tesla Model Y, a crossover that millions of families use every day. Dual electric motors sit low in the chassis, delivering power directly to the wheels without the need for turbo boost or gear changes. Even regular models move rapidly off the line, and this one had enough punch to indicate a quicker trim. The driver carefully staged as the Ford’s emergency lights illuminated the track and the siren filled the air.

When the Christmas tree fell, the Tesla moved first, causing a red-light violation. That small slip had no effect on the outcome. The electric motors provided instant torque, propelling the Model Y forward with no lag or wheel spin. The Ford required a split second for its turbos to spool and its heavy frame to gain speed. By halfway, the deficit appeared to be crucial.

Timers at the finish line recorded the exact difference. The Model Y crossed in 12.93 seconds, with a trap speed of over 112 miles per hour. The Police Interceptor Utility covered the same distance in 15.78 seconds at 88 mph. Nearly three full seconds separated the two vehicles, and more than 23 miles per hour separated their speeds at the end of the run.
