Spirit Airlines Prepares for Its Last Flight as Rescue Efforts Collapse

News from multiple outlets confirms Spirit Airlines will stop flying around three in the morning tomorrow after years of mounting losses reached a breaking point. The carrier plans to wind down its entire operation and sell off its fleet of planes in the days ahead.

Things came apart in the last few days, when talks for a new $500 million government bailout fell through. This comes after weeks of contentious negotiations with the Trump administration. One proposal would have granted the government up to 90% ownership of the airline in exchange for special warrants. Holders of its bonds dug in their heels since the terms of the agreement would have prioritized any fresh government funding over their personal claim to any surviving assets. To make matters worse, there were personality confrontations inside the administration, which just added to the pressure until everything fell apart.

President Trump made a public remark regarding the situation at the White House on May 1st. He stated that the government would only intervene if the deal was good for America first. Then there was Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who stated in interviews earlier this week that up to four prior attempts to prop up the airline had failed and that the airline had never earned a profit.

Fuel prices ended up playing a significant role in the eventual collapse. The protracted conflict with Iran has raised jet fuel prices sharply because it had interrupted supplies along a crucial canal that handles 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas traffic. On top of that, Spirit was still heavily in debt as a result of its two previous Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings, and the company had not earned a profit since 2019. Even when it reduced its flight schedule and sold some of its jets to focus on the main cities of Detroit, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale, it continued to burn through cash at an unsustainable rate. For example, losses during the first two months of this year were $60 million.

Spirit earned its reputation by offering rock-bottom base tickets to undercut its larger competitors, then charging customers extra for almost everything else – from selecting a seat, carrying a bag, and purchasing a printed boarding pass. That strategy essentially revolutionized how many Americans fly when the airline initially appeared on the market in 2006. It grew quickly enough to spark a bidding battle between Frontier and JetBlue a few years ago. The Justice Department actually halted the planned JetBlue merger in 2024, citing the fact that an independent Spirit kept overall industry rates lower. Without that agreement, the airline sort of punched back, down again.
