Yoshi Meets a Talking Book Full of Forgotten Creatures in His Switch 2 Debut

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book Overview Trailer
Nintendo released an overview trailer earlier today, providing a glimpse at what Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is all about. The clip immediately sets the tone for some laid-back fun with Yoshi and his island companions, who are enjoying themselves on a calm little island until a talking book named Mr E appears out of nowhere and crashes into the scene. The impact manages to wipe all memory of the weird little creatures that lived within the pages of the book.

Yoshi agrees to embark on an adventure to assist Mr E, jumping immediately into the pages of the book. On the inside, he’s having a great time exploring all of these colorful environments and discovering strange and fascinating things. He’s on a quest to restore Mr E’s lost knowledge, and he’s doing so one enjoyable discovery at a time. Some iconic moves return, albeit with a twist. Yoshi can stretch his tongue out to catch items, throw eggs at targets, flutter around the air for a while, and pound the ground to really shake things loose. The tail flick is a new move that has really got our attention. By flicking the tail, you may pick up a variety of species and send them careening onto Yoshi’s back, where they can either cause a new entertaining reaction or simply come along for the ride while you explore.

Testing out new creatures quickly leads to all sorts of surprises. Grabbing one can be a real treat for your taste buds, but throwing an egg at it may result in an unexpected reaction. Touching some of the flower buds causes them to open in a rush, and stamping down hard on the ground near a patch of water transforms it into a beautiful green lawn. Every time you complete a successful experiment, you receive a neat miniature sketch of the creature to paste in the book. When you locate a particularly large or impressive item, that section is completed, and you can proceed to the next chapter.

At this point, you can choose a name for the monster, or if you’re stumped, ask Mr E for a suggestion. One of the flower figures was named “Crazy Daisy,” while others were named after their singing tones or their tendency to gather in swarms. Every creature behaves uniquely; for example, one group of bees chases each other around in formation, while another group simply multiplies itself. As you proceed, new regions emerge, such as mountains, seashore cliffs, and valleys in the latter chapters, each with its own set of discoveries and observations.

Bowser Jr appears once or twice in the game, accompanied by his buddy, who is also exploring the book for a secret item. Their presence adds some mystery to the game, but not enough to take away from the main focus, which is simply having fun discovering all of this great stuff.

You’ll also be collecting tokens as you progress through the game, which will allow you to unlock hints about creatures you haven’t seen yet and make guesses about what will appear next. Scanning specific amiibo figures earns you more tokens and provides a fortune reading based on the scan result. The whole game will be released on May 21st, exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2, and you can pre-order it now via the eShop.
