“52 Blue” is a new coming-of-age movie that was directed by Egyptian filmmaker Ali El Arabi.

The film follows a young man from a remote coastal village in India who travels against all odds to meet his hero at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

While it may initially seem like another underdog sports story, within minutes, it reveals itself as something far more intimate and resonant.

It was  shot on location with Bollywood star Neha Dhupia, Adil Hussain (“Life of Pi”), and it features an original song by multi-platinum rapper Badshah.

The synopsis is: After years of being sheltered by his father, Ashish (Yadav Shashidhar)–a young man from an island in Kerala, India–leaves his isolated home in pursuit of achieving his goal in memory of his late brother.

As his mother empowers him to take the step forward, Ashish goes through his own journey, to the World Cup in Qatar, with the hopes of meeting his childhood soccer hero Lionel Messi. This journey has led him to an adventure far greater than he could have imagined.

Towards the second half of the movie, it underscores such values as connection, identity, courage, and resilience, especially when times get tough and challenging.

The cinematography is visually striking

This marks Ali’s first film as director since “Captains of Zaatari” and it is the sole feature film that was shot during and inside the real FIFA World Cup.

Without giving too much away, this is a soccer adventure movie that needs to be experienced by all.
