iPhone Duo Opens Apple’s Biggest Screen and Fits It in a Book-Style Foldable

Apple spent years watching other companies ship foldable phones. John Ternus used his first September event as CEO to close that gap with iPhone Duo, a short, wide book-style handset that closes like a passport and opens into a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display. Ternus called it the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.

When closed, Duo measures 117.8 by 84.1 by 11.3 millimeters and weighs 254 grams. When the slab is opened, it lowers to a breathtakingly thin 5.2 millimeters, which is no exaggeration given that Apple claims it is the tiniest iPhone it has ever shipped. Grade 5 titanium frames both halves with a stunning mirror shine. Ceramic Shield 2 wraps around the outer screen and Ceramic Shield shields the back. To top it all off, the IP68 designation means it can endure being immersed six meters deep for 30 minutes, a feat that many foldables still struggle with. A unique hinge composed of over 100 carefully assembled elements keeps the inner panel flat and closes with a gratifying magnetic click. As an added touch, the display layers are supported by viscoelastic adhesives linked to a titanium plate, allowing them to glide past each other when the phone folds. Apple has incorporated a sophisticated nano-texture and a micro-lens surface developed with maskless laser lithography to reduce glare and make the crease look as smooth as possible. However, you’ll probably still recognize that you’re staring at a folded phone. Unless you’re in an area with plenty of natural light, you may have to look about for that crease.

Duo’s two screens have the same aspect ratio, which is undoubtedly the most under-the-radar design decision that gives Duo the feel of a finished product. The outside glass reaches up to 5.4 inches and, let’s be honest, occupies over 90% of the real estate on an iPhone 18 Pro. The inner glass, on the other hand, is a full 50% larger than an 18 Pro Max. Both panels can operate ProMotion at up to 120Hz, Always On, and 3,000 nits outdoors, making them true powerhouse displays. Every fold angle is treated as a genuine method to work in iOS 27, and your content scales fluidly between displays without requiring a restart. You can also run two distinct programs side by side. Do you want to have one app open twice? Not an issue. If you have many apps that you use frequently, iOS will retain your favorite layout. Partial folds, on the other hand, can occasionally cause the interface to become weird and unresponsive, particularly when tapping near the crease. As a nice touch, the speakers adjust automatically as the device’s two sections fold and unfold. Even in standby mode, the Duo serves as a useful bedside clock with a subtle light. You have two color options: star white and nite sky. Prices begin at $1,999 for a 256 GB model and increase to $2,199 for 512 GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and $3,199 for 2TB of storage. A Duo Case that comes in two pieces costs $79, while a Folio with a built-in kickstand costs $129. Those who pre-order can do so beginning on October 16th at 5 a.m. Pacific, and in the first wave, shops in over 70 nations will get inventory on October 23rd.
