Apple Officially Increases Prices for Macs, iPads, and Accessories as Memory Costs Surge

Apple announced broad price increases for its Mac computers and iPad tablets on June 25. Sharp rises in memory and storage component costs prompted the changes, which touch entry-level models as well as several higher-end configurations.

Dramatic demand for specialized memory from artificial intelligence data centers created the pressure. Chip suppliers shifted production toward high-bandwidth memory needed for AI servers. That shift left tighter supplies and much higher prices for the components Apple and other consumer electronics makers rely on. Industry reports indicate memory prices quadrupled over recent quarters in some cases.

Apple had worked to absorb a large share of those extra costs for some time. Company leaders preferred to avoid passing increases along to customers. The scale and speed of the jumps eventually made that approach unsustainable.
In a statement, Apple said it had never seen a component price increase this much and this quickly. Officials noted they had shielded customers from the rises so far but reached a point where adjustments on a number of products became necessary. The company added that it knows the news is unwelcome and continues working on solutions.

Tim Cook described the conditions in direct terms during a recent interview. He called the memory market situation a once-in-a-century event unlike anything he had encountered in more than forty years in the industry. Price changes appear across most Mac and iPad lines. The MacBook Neo, Apple’s most affordable laptop, now starts at 699 dollars instead of 599 dollars. MacBook Air models rose by 200 dollars, with the 13-inch version moving from 1,099 dollars to 1,299 dollars and the 15-inch version from 1,299 dollars to 1,499 dollars.

Several MacBook Pro configurations also increased. Models previously listed at 1,699 dollars now start at 1,999 dollars. Higher-performance versions saw additional bumps, with some climbing several hundred dollars more. iPad pricing followed a similar pattern. The standard iPad now starts at 449 dollars, up 100 dollars. iPad Air models rose by 150 to 200 dollars depending on size. Both 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro versions increased by 200 dollars each. The iPad mini moved up 100 dollars to 599 dollars.

Other products received increases as well. The iMac now starts at 1,499 dollars. Certain Mac Studio models saw larger jumps, including one top configuration that rose by 1,300 dollars. HomePod speakers, the HomePod mini, the Apple TV 4K, and the Vision Pro headset also carry modestly higher prices. iPhones, Apple Watches, and AirPods remain at previous prices for now. Apple focused this round of adjustments on the Mac and iPad families.
