Commodore Callback 8020 Unveiled, is a Flip Phone That Puts Modern Distractions on Hold

Commodore has stepped back into hardware with a device that takes the classic flip form and gives it a clear job. The Callback 8020 handles calls, messages, maps, and a handful of practical apps while locking social platforms and open browsers out of reach. That boundary sits at the center of the whole design. A compact body opens to show a modest main screen above a real keypad. Close the device and the screen tucks away.

Inside the software, the story is largely the same. Sailfish OS is based on Linux and was created by Jolla. Most Android apps continue to function due to a compatibility layer, but you are still unable to use social media, a complete web browser, or traditional business email programs because the system simply disables them. If anyone attempts to circumvent it, they are confronted with a hard halt, such as DNS checks that block access to restricted services even if you try to install something manually. In the background, their store only sells approved things, though they do provide a review mechanism if something actually meets the criteria.

When it comes to hardware, there is also a shift toward focusing on what is truly important rather than always connecting. There’s a MediaTek Helio G81 processor, 4GB of memory, and 64GB of storage, which can be expanded with a microSD card. The main screen is 3.25 inches and often remains dark, which is useful given that there isn’t much going on. The small front panel displays only the time, battery level, and signal. Alerts are sent in by a small set of dome lights that shine without lighting up the entire screen. Power comes from a 1550mAh battery, which you can even remove and replace yourself, and skipping 5G reduces the number of always-on data paths to worry about, extending the duration.

Audio also receives special attention, as it is clearly more than simply a sidebar on a conventional phone. ESS and Cirrus Logic chipsets operate with a strong DAC to provide clean sound from a chip, and each unit includes a good pair of in-ear monitors. There is also an FM tuner in there that may be used to listen to live stations without the requirement for an app or membership. You can also utilize classic Commodore SID sounds as ringtones or alarms, and there is a built-in player for chiptune music. A few vintage Commodore 64 games, including Snake, have been included in case you wish to pass the time without browsing through endless feeds.

In terms of colors, they’ve maintained their visual flair while creating a slew of new options. ProtoPET White has a great metallic sheen with blue hues, and it looks good. BASIC Beige and SX Silver are more subdued, while the transparent Starlight edition adds a see-through appearance to the design. If you want to go all out, the Founders Edition includes gold-plated embellishments and special packaging. If you want to add some variety, you can swap out the rear covers and add a small charm holder. Pre-orders will be available later this month, with delivery expected by the end of the year. Prices begin at $499 for the normal colors and increase from there for the special editions.
