Paris to Réunion and Boston to Honolulu are Domestic Flights That Defy Distance, Officially World’s Longest

Flights within a country’s boundaries can cover a long distance, but there are a few itineraries that genuinely test the definition of non-stop domestic service. Both are extraordinarily long journeys from a mainland center to an island in the middle of the ocean, which are technically classified as domestic under government standards.
One goes from Paris to the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean, while the other connects Boston to Honolulu, Hawaii. Both of these flights are challenging on both the plane and the crew, but they take you to places that feel like a totally new planet without having to go through any sort of international arrival procedure… if you can call it that.

The distance between Paris and Saint Denis Réunion is around 5,809 miles, and the flight time is approximately 11 hours and 40 minutes, making for a grueling journey. This is now the world’s longest domestic flight. Air France and Air Austral work together to offer this route. Air Austral, the island’s airline, regularly operates the 777-300ER. They do, however, periodically bring out the 787, a long-range twin that can easily cover the distance. This route has been in operation for decades, but it became nonstop in 1994 when the runway at Roland Garros Airport on Réunion was renovated to allow larger planes such as the 777 to take off loaded and without fuel stops.
Prior to the runway repair, those massive planes would simply make stops along the route to fill up, but now it’s much easier thanks to contemporary twin jets that are more fuel efficient and can complete the same trip without stopping in the middle. Réunion has the advantage of being a French overseas department, which means it is considered domestic under French law. When you arrive, you’ll find yourself in a country where the local currency is the Euro, the government is administered from Paris, and there’s a truly unusual mix of volcanic peaks, black sand beaches, and a Creole way of life that seamlessly integrates with French culture. The time difference between Réunion and Paris is 3-4 hours, which can result in jet lag, so you may need to adjust your body clock. However, the fact that the French language and institutions are still available can make things much easier if you speak French or have already visited.
Delta will restart service between Boston and Honolulu on December 19, 2026. The 5,095-mile journey from east to west will take about 11 hours and 40 minutes, but the return trip is generally shorter due to prevailing winds. Delta will fly the A330-300 in a four-cabin configuration with 34 lie-flat seats in Delta One, which allow direct aisle access, extra bedding, and meals cooked by chef Jose Andres, as well as some more familiar alternatives from partners such as Shake Shack.
Delta launched the service in 2024, but it was put on hold in early 2025 as demand began to fall. Now that leisure travel is resuming, Delta believes there is enough interest to reinstate it, at least for the time being, as daily during the peak holiday season and four times per week the rest of the winter. Nobody else is currently flying nonstop from New England to Hawaii, so it appears to be a viable winter vacation option for those tired of traveling through some of the warmer hubs along the way.
