Floating City Bound for Endless Horizons Marks Revival of the Ambitious Freedom Ship Project

Plans for the Freedom Ship call for a vessel stretching one mile in length, wider than many city blocks, and tall enough to carry 30 decks. The goal is to create a self-contained community of up to 80,000 people that roams the oceans without ever needing a home port. A team led by Freedom Cruise Line International CEO Roger Gooch has taken up the concept after earlier attempts stalled. Gooch works with a 12-person leadership group and has brought in the architectural firm Schopfer Associates to refine the design.
Engineers have planned the Freedom Ship since the 1990s, thanks to American engineer Norman Nixon. He envisioned a floating settlement that would land outside national boundaries. Nixon died in 2012, and the funds to continue the project for a period did not materialise. However, the project has recently resurfaced in the media, and there is optimism that construction in Indonesia will resume as soon as adequate funding is acquired.

It’s gargantuan in scale, with a length ranging from 5,280 to 5,900 feet, according to reports, or roughly seven times the length of the Titanic. The width is around 800 feet, and the total capacity would be enough to house approximately 50,000 people, 10,000 tourists, and a workforce of 20,000 to keep things working properly. Inside the ship, there will be 15 kilometers of pathways and a tram network that connects the various decks and neighborhoods. The ship is too huge to park in any harbor, thus there are eight helipads on top for helicopter transfers.

The amenities on board are primarily designed to suit all basic needs while also providing a variety of comforts that we all appreciate. There are sections for families, schools that cover early childhood through secondary education, and even references to postsecondary education opportunities. In addition to the other essentials, there is a hospital, a bank, an office, and a shopping mall.

There’s a 15,000-seat sports stadium, a water park, a dive-able aquarium, two museums, a symphony hall, a convention center, nightclubs, a casino, and a full-service spa, as well as a shopping mall. There are three acres of parkland and a two-story eating hall offering a range of cuisines. Furthermore, there are various green spaces and trails that loop through the area, allowing passengers to get some fresh air without leaving the ship.

It will all be powered by nuclear energy. Not only is it more efficient, but it also emits less carbon than most other major cruise ships. The ship will do a full circumnavigation every 2 – 3 years while remaining in international waters, pausing at locations for a week at a time and letting residents and guests get onshore via ferry as they like.

Some project supporters claim that the ship will someday be able to help clean the oceans, although details on how this will all work are yet unknown at best. The basic idea appears to be that this is an area with plenty of space to call your own, and you can just change your longitude every day.

Construction will reportedly begin in Indonesia and will take approximately 3 to 4 years once funding is secured. However, residents will be able to begin moving in roughly halfway through, so while work on the rest of the ship continues, some people will be able to experience life onboard. The estimated total cost is approximately $16 billion or £12 billion, but the most obvious hurdle to making this happen is money.
