Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design Hides a 10.2-Inch Office Behind a $3,000 Tri-Fold Pocket Slab

Huawei unveiled Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design in China today as its most expensive tri-fold yet, a phone that closes into a 6.5-inch slab and opens into a 10.2-inch tablet. Both wings now fold inward so the flexible panel sits fully protected when you snap it shut, a change from the mixed fold on the first Mate XT. Closed, the body measures 157.2 by 77 by 12.3 millimeters and weighs 299 grams. Fully spread, it stretches 219.2 millimeters wide and tapers to 3.5 millimeters at the thinnest stretch.

The cover screen is a 6.5-inch LTPO OLED with a resolution of 2,442 by 1,140 pixels, a super smooth refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120 Hertz, and a brightness of up to 6,500 nits behind some fancy glass. Huawei appears to be putting a lot of faith in its scratch and drop resistance, and the inside display is really a very large 10.2 inches at 3,184 by 2,232 pixels, with a tall and slender 12.8:9 ratio and a maximum refresh rate of 90 Hz in the normal model. One-terabyte units contain a nice little feature called Lingdun, which is a hardware privacy screen that employs a secret set of pixels to keep the image visible from the front while turning completely black from the sides when desired. You may activate that mode by double-tapping the cover screen or hitting the small smart key on the side.

The Kirin 9050 Pro is the first phone processor to use the fancy new LogicFolding Tau layout and make it into production. The company claims it is 42% quicker than the previous Mate XT, and it has a Maleoon GPU that performs complex tasks such as hardware ray tracing, as well as a Da Vinci NPU that can execute a 30 billion parameter model directly on the device. Every configuration comes with at least 16 GB of RAM, while storage options range from 256 GB to 2 TB. In terms of the operating system, HarmonyOS 7 can manage up to three programs open at the same time, and you can resize and control their loudness as needed.

The battery has a capacity of 5,600 mAh and can be charged quickly, at 66 watts with a wire or 50 watts with a pad. In terms of water and dust resistance, it has a decent rating of IP58 and IP59, making it the first phone of its kind to receive those ratings.

If you hold the open tablet with both hands and push the metal frame against your skin, you can even take an ECG reading from it, but don’t get too excited because Chinese regulators have only granted that feature a Class II medical certification. If you need to communicate with someone in China, the BeiDou network allows you to make (or receive) satellite calls and even exchange two-way messaging.

You can get it in a variety of colors, including a gorgeous purple, a sleek black, and a nice white, and it all comes with a fancy star-cut camera ring that Huawei most likely spent a lot of money on because it’s made of yttrium crystal. In terms of pricing, the 256 GB model starts at 19,999 yuan (£2,980), though I’m not sure why anyone would buy that given a terabyte model is only a few hundred extra. The high-end 1 TB model with the privacy screen will cost you 24,999 yuan (£3,725), or you can spend the extra money on a 2 TB model with the M-Pen 3 Mini stylus kit for 29,999 yuan (£4,470).
