Zohran Mamdani expands Adams’ trash-fighting pet project to 25,000 more NYC homes

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the expansion of the Empire Bin Initiative — a key measure created under the Adams administration.

Hizzoner said Friday the city was expanding the containerization program to six districts, bringing the trash bins to 25,000 homes across the Big Apple.

“The era of Empire Bins is now dawning,” Mamdani said.

Some neighborhoods included will be Hunts Point in the Bronx; Manhattan’s West Village and SoHo; Sunnyside and Hunters Point in Queens; Shore Acres in Staten Island, and Brooklyn’s Prospect Heights and Crown Heights.

The expansion is expected to be up and running by the end of 2027.

Mamdani’s predecessor first started his “trash revolution” and announced the Empire Bin program, which kicked off last June.

The initiative is aimed at eliminating mounds of trash bags on city sidewalks.
