Apple Celebrates Fifty Years That Changed Everything

Apple celebrates its 50th anniversary on April 1 with a series of events around the world showcasing the people who’ve used their tools to create some real game changers, all 50 years after the company was founded on that same date in 1976, when Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs, and Ron Wayne got the first Apple computer running in a family garage. Their first goal was to create machines that the rest of us could use without requiring a Ph.D., simply to see if it was possible, you know.

The Apple I’s early sales demonstrated that the idea wasn’t completely bad, but it was the Apple II, which arrived just a year later, that truly transformed everything. For the first time, customers got a computer that seemed approachable rather than intimidating. It started selling like crazy, which was a good thing because it was just what the young corporation needed to move out of the garage and start making money. As we all know, success does not always come with peace and quiet, and by the mid-1980s, internal conflicts had driven Steve Jobs out the door. Then, for the following decade or so, Apple embarked on a wild goose chase of expensive experiments and declining sales, and by the end of the 1990s, they were on the verge of disaster, with their staff reduced to a third and the future looking bleak.

In 1997, just when all hope appeared to be lost, Jobs returned to the fray and turned things around. The next year, Steve introduced the iMac, a bright, gleaming desktop that effectively put an end to the dreaded beige boxes of the past. Sales took off. A year or so later, the iBook arrived, a laptop with the same familiar design but built-in wireless networking, just as most of us were still fumbling with connections. Then, in 2001, the iPod appeared, a little MP3 player that could fit a thousand songs in your pocket, and it became the thing that everyone desired. Those white earphones are now ubiquitous, owing to their cultural significance, and the music industry has never been the same since.

Each successive version seemed to build on the one before it, and when the iPhone debuted in 2007, it transformed your phone into a pocket computer that everyone wanted to reach for as soon as they got out of bed. The iPad, released in 2010, extended the reach to a somewhat larger screen ideal for reading, creating, and watching videos. Later came AirPods, the Apple Watch, and the Vision Pro, each of which added something new for people to do without having to master a lot of technical stuff. Meanwhile, services such as the App Store, Apple Music, and iCloud continued to flourish, providing users with locations to store their memories, share their music, and pay for a coffee at a look. Today, there are approximately 2.5 billion Apple devices on the market, with a market value of $3.5 trillion, not bad for 50 years of work.

Tim Cook has led the company since 2011, keeping it on track while maintaining the clean design and dependable performance that Steve Jobs valued. On March 31, he stepped up to the Nasdaq bell on the Apple campus and rang it to kick off the celebrations, and that one moment pretty much summed up the entire 50-year journey from hand soldering circuit boards to producing a global network of stores and services, which was quite an accomplishment.
