Apple’s New 14-Inch MacBook Pro M6 Puts Serious Power Into a Machine Easy to Carry

Apple 14-inch MacBook Pro M6 Reveal
Apple introduced the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip on October 27, placing a 2-nanometer processor inside the same portable aluminum body that has defined the line for years. The M6 uses a 12-core CPU that includes what Apple calls the world’s fastest CPU core, paired with a 12-core GPU that embeds a Neural Accelerator in every graphics core. A dual 16-core Neural Engine handles the AI work, while unified memory starts at 16GB and can be ordered up to 32GB, with bandwidth reaching 170GB per second on the higher configurations.

Gains over the previous M5 model are up to 30% in graphics and 25% in AI tasks, which means code compiles in Xcode and scenes render in Blender about 1.3 times faster. Those switching from an old M1 MacBook Pro are noticing significant gains, with graphics 11 times faster and AI workloads improving up to 13 times. The laptop still weighs 3.4 pounds and dimensions 12.31 by 8.71 by 0.61 inches, retaining the small design that has become synonymous with these machines.

The battery life has been increased to 24 hours of video playback, which happens to be the longest Mac battery life rating Apple has ever offered, and it comes from the same old 72.4 watt hour pack. The new 50% charge in 30 minutes with a high-wattage adapter is also a welcome addition. Its 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display remains unchanged, featuring the same mini-LED screen, 3024 by 1964 resolution, adaptive 120Hz refresh, 1600-nit peak HDR brightness, and an optional nano-texture finish to prevent glare. That’s in addition to the traditional three Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe 3, full-size HDMI, an SD card slot, and headphone jack, which are all still present, but with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 added for good measure.

The starting price remains at $1,999 for 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage in space black or silver. Education buyers pay $1,899; however, upgrading to 24GB or 32GB of memory costs a few hundred dollars more. Larger storage choices are available, but more expensive, owing to current component shortages. Pre-orders begin on October 28, and the first units arrive on November 6.

If you’re a student, freelancer, or professional who wants to do photo editing, code compilation, or on-device AI tools while on the road without carrying around a desktop, this laptop has you covered. Or, if your current laptop is a few years old, you will see even more benefits. The keyboard, trackpad, and 12-megapixel Center Stage camera stay precisely where you’d expect them to be. Those who require extreme power should opt for the 16-inch variants, but this 14-inch model is ideal for anyone who simply needs some practical, portable power without the bulk.
