NVIDIA Packs Its Graphics Legacy Into Free GeForce Trading Cards for Fans to Collect

NVIDIA turned its graphics card legacy into a series of physical GeForce trading cards that celebrate the moments and hardware that defined PC gaming for millions. Fourteen designs make up the first collection. They span from the company’s earliest multimedia processors to standout GPUs and the tech demos that pushed boundaries in real time.

One design pays tribute to the NV1. Launched in 1995, it combined all of the necessities, including joysticks, audio, and 3D, into a single chip, laying the framework for the types of dedicated graphics technology we today take for granted. Next next is the GeForce 256. What a release for 1999, as the first genuine GPU capable of performing transform, lighting, and rendering chores that previously slowed the CPU.

By mid-decade, the GeForce 7800 GTX is becoming well-known for its excellent rendering capabilities, which are a significant improvement over its predecessors. Meanwhile, the GeForce 10 Series is heavily influenced by the Pascal architecture. Cards like the GTX 1080 then arrived and provided a big boost in both efficiency and power, making high-resolution gaming and the early days of virtual reality much more affordable. To show off, the legendary demos of Bubble, Chameleon, and Medusa appeared, including all sorts of cool reflected landscapes, shader-driven surfaces, and intricate character work for the period.

Gaming from NVIDIA’s past appears on a card inspired by Unreal Tournament 2004 and Borderlands. It’s an homage to the long-running “GeForce Ready” promotion, which certifies titles for peak GeForce performance. For people who enjoy modern gaming, a special edition card has been designed in the manner of a Cyberpunk 2077 inspired design, based on the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. Finally, a checklist card completes the set, allowing collectors to check off which designs they’ve managed to snag from the entire lineup.

The collectible cards themselves have a distinct, very graphics card-like appearance, with a black background that resembles an actual circuit board and the GeForce logo standing out prominently. The borders are even shaped to resemble the gold connections that connect a card to a motherboard. The numbering on the front emphasizes how collectible these are, which the designers expressly sought to build as something that would sit beside old gear or on a shelf with other gaming mementos.

The cards will be available to fans as part of the Summer of RTX campaign. Packs have been available for free at NVIDIA booths and partner areas at events such as QuakeCon, Bilibili World, and Gamescom. There have also been a number of social media giveaways associated with the same program, as well as a few opportunities to obtain a card at live trailer viewings at some of the summer’s major gaming events.
