But Senate Republicans are seeking $1 billion in\u00a0taxpayer \u200bfunding\u00a0to the Secret Service for security upgrades to the ballroom and other structures being built beneath it.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>President Trump holds up renderings of the planned White House ballroom, aboard Air Force One, March 29, 2026. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Democrats have\u00a0criticized the \u200bballroom\u00a0as an expensive and frivolous diversion by Trump at a time when Americans face rising costs such as higher fuel \u2060prices. Trump, a real estate developer-turned-politician, has written on social media that it will be \u201cthe finest Building of its kind anywhere in the World.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MacDonough ruled that \u200bthe security funding provision falls under chamber rules that require 60 votes to pass most legislation, according to the office of Senator Jeff Merkley, the top Democrat on \u200bthe Senate Budget Committee.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>The parliamentarian interprets Senate rules, including whether legislative provisions are permitted. Republican senators still could revise the legislation to try to gain the parliamentarian\u2019s approval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we expect Republicans to change this bill to appease Trump, Democrats are prepared to challenge any change to this bill,\u201d Merkley said in a statement.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Work continues on the construction of the ballroom at the White House, May 16, 2026. <span class=\"credit\">AP Photo\/Rod Lamkey<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader \u200bJohn Thune\u2019s office did not immediately return a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>If Republicans do not succeed, they may be unable to include the ballroom-related funding in a $72 \u200bbillion spending package they plan to bring to a vote on the Senate floor, with passage expected on a party-line vote with Democrats opposed. Trump has said the ballroom will be completed around September 2028, near the end of his second term in office.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats, hoping to win control of Congress in November\u2019s midterm elections, \u200bare seizing on Republican support of the ballroom to portray Trump\u2019s party as out of touch with the cost-of-living \u200bconcerns of Americans at \u2060a time of rising energy costs driven by the\u00a0Iran war\u00a0he and Israel launched in February.<\/p>\n<p>Trump last year ordered the demolition of the White House\u2019s East Wing \u2014 constructed in 1902 during Theodore Roosevelt\u2019s presidency and expanded four decades later during Franklin Roosevelt\u2019s presidency \u2014 to make way for his ballroom.<\/p>\n<p>The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a nonprofit organization, \u2060filed a lawsuit \u200bchallenging the project, arguing that neither the president nor the National Park Service, which manages the \u200bWhite House grounds, possessed the authority to tear down the historic structure or erect a major new facility without explicit congressional approval.<\/p>\n<p>A US appeals court in April allowed construction to continue after the \u200bjudge handling the National Trust lawsuit issued an order halting the project.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
