Christine Gregoire attacked her fellow Democrats in the Washington state legislature after the\u00a0state\u2019s recent millionaires\u2019 tax.<\/p>\n<p>While attending the Association of Washington Business\u00a02026 Spring Summit\u00a0on May 6, Gregoire, who served as Washington\u2019s governor from 2005 to 2013, was asked whether she believes the state legislature understands the impact of its economic policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I really don\u2019t, as evidence by, you mentioned the estate tax,\u201d Gregoire said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI argued with some folks about the estate tax. We were the highest in the country, tied with Hawaii at 20%. We went to 35%. We\u2019re not just the highest. We\u2019re beyond the highest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though Washington\u2019s estate tax was raised to 35%, a recent bill passed in April has since rolled back the\u00a0rate to 20%\u00a0after backlash.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Former Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire slammed fellow Democrats over the\u00a0state\u2019s new millionaires\u2019 tax. <span class=\"credit\">TVW<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAnd I said now, you understand the consequences of this?\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I see your fiscal note? Because I\u2019d like to help it. Because here\u2019s what you can expect. Those people are not homeless. They will not pay. They\u2019re leaving. When they leave, they stop paying capital gains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they leave, they stop giving significantly to philanthropy, which would otherwise be necessary by government. So you understand, do you see the consequences of what you\u2019re doing? And the answer is no.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Gregoire argued the tax would drive wealthy Washington residents away, hurting philanthropy and capital gains. <span class=\"credit\">Diegomezr \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gregoire also called out Democratic state House members for a lack of business experience in understanding the impact taxes have on small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would suggest to you, we don\u2019t really have an income problem,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have a spending problem, and we\u2019re answering it by stacking one more tax, one more rule, one more regulation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the one thing that the business community doesn\u2019t need is that lack of predictability. That\u2019s how businesses grow, that\u2019s how they thrive. That\u2019s not healthy for our business community at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pushed through by the Democratic majority during the 2026 session, the millionaires\u2019 tax imposes a\u00a09.9% tax on annual income\u00a0exceeding $1 million for individuals or households.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has faced criticism for dismissing the idea of millionaires leaving the state.  <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While the tax was signed in March 2026, it is not scheduled to take effect until Jan. 1, 2028, with the first payments due in 2029.<\/p>\n<p>After the tax was passed,\u00a0Starbucks, which originated in Seattle, announced that it would be moving 2,000 corporate jobs to a new regional headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p>The tax also came as Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson, a self-described socialist, faced criticism for her\u00a0dismissive attitude\u00a0toward the idea of millionaires leaving the state.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
