Since the murders of Maggie and Paul, I have tried to approach everything with honesty, dignity, and respect for the people we lost. When writing \u201cWithin the House of Murdaugh, Amid a Unique Friendship, Blanca &amp; Maggie,\u201d I openly shared my fears surrounding the possibility of a retrial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her book, Turrubiate wrote that she believed that Murdaugh\u2019s guilty verdict \u201cwas justice for them,\u201d and she believed it \u201cshould stand.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, I respect the legal process and understand the court\u2019s responsibility to ensure fairness under the law. My hope moving forward is that Maggie and Paul are not lost in the headlines, speculation, or noise surrounding this case. They were deeply loved people whose lives mattered far beyond the tragedy that brought national attention to their family,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>At the center of the stunning reversal is Hill, who oversaw the blockbuster proceedings and was later accused of improperly influencing jurors. Don\u2019t let them confuse you or convince you or throw you off.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The documents say Hill tried to \u201cinsert herself into the jury\u2019s deliberations through these comments, which was in line with her stated desire for a guilty verdict to sell more copies of the book she planned to write.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ruling references the post-trial court\u2019s finding that, \u201cHill was attracted by the siren call of celebrity\u201d and \u201callowed her desire for the public attention of the moment to overcome her duty to her oath of office.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAccordingly, we hold\u00a0Murdaugh\u2019s right to a fair\u00a0trial by an impartial jury was violated, and the post-trial court erred in denying his motion for a new trial,\u201d the ruling says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because Hill was a top court official, her words carried unusual weight and raised serious concerns that the jury\u2019s decision may not have been based solely on the evidence presented at trial.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2025,\u00a0Hill pleaded guilty to four\u00a0charges \u2014 obstruction of justice and perjury for showing a reporter photographs that were sealed court exhibits and then lying about it, plus two counts of misconduct in office for taking bonuses and promoting a book she wrote on the trial through her public office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no excuse for the mistakes I made.
