It\u2019s under the counter,\u201d said Osbert Orduna, CEO of The Cannabis Place in Middle Village. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the convenience store model.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe illicit market continues on a daily basis,\u201d he said, noting some illegal vendors are still offering their products through Meta and Google platforms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are physical stores and the illegal online delivery sales are exponential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are now 659 licensed retail merchants selling weed and other cannabis products in New York State while Empire State authorities have shuttered more than 600 illicit shops since weed became legal.<\/p>\n<p>The state Cannabis Control Board approved 32 new cannabis licenses last week, bringing the total number of licenses to 2,259 for the industry, which includes marijuana farmers\/cultivators, processors, \u201cmicrobusinesses\u201d as well as retail dispensaries.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Daily sales in April 2026 averaged $5.14 million, a notable increase from last month\u2019s total of $4.85 million. <span class=\"credit\">Helayne Seidman for the NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cGrowth at this stage isn\u2019t just about adding licenses, it\u2019s about building a stable and sustainable market as more operators come online,\u201d said John Kagia, the acting executive director of the state Office of Cannabis Management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing real progress in how businesses are ramping up, how the supply chain is functioning, and how the market is starting to normalize across regions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But city Sheriff Anthony Miranda said authorities are still fighting the illegal shops. <\/p>\n<p>The sheriff\u2019s office and the NYPD just shut down an illegal \u201cgrow house\u201d in the Bronx on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe illegal market continues to evolve. We have to be vigilant,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIllegal operators are making deliveries. They have an online presence. The laws have not kept up with the nuances of the industry,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff\u2019s office and NYPD have sealed more than 1,650 illicit pot shops, according to Miranda.<\/p>\n<p>Total cannabis sales from licensed operators since the inception in 2022 following the legalization of marijuana for adult use totals $3.2 billion.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Experts mentioned that with illicit sales, the number could be as high as $50 million. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pot sales totalled $1.7 billion over the prior 12 months and $553 million from January through April.<\/p>\n<p>The cannabis market also saw more activity around the unofficial April 20 cannabis holiday, generating $37.9 million in sales for the week \u2014 a 20% increase over 2025 \u2014 with single-day sales on the day reaching $8.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the OCM said it will create its own capital loan fund to help weed merchants.<\/p>\n<p>A loan program run by another agency turned into a bad trip for debtors.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the Hochul administration halted a multimillion-dollar state Dormitory Authority fund designed to help disadvantaged people open cannabis shops. <\/p>\n<p>Critics alleged the fund became predatory with high interest.<\/p>\n<p>OCM officials vowed not to saddle weed merchants with too much debt.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
