height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Grab your noses, folks.<\/p>\n<p>While New York City has always been aromatic, it\u2019s been a particularly pungent year so far, with smell complaints soaring higher than the Freedom Tower itself.<\/p>\n<p>With 5,332 stench reports to NYC\u2019s non-emergency 311 hotline already this year, 2026 is shaping up to be quite a stinker \u2014 and we haven\u2019t yet even hit the peak summer stink season.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>This summer could very well be a full-on nasal assault in NYC. <span class=\"credit\">fotofabrika \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In fact, during the highly aromatic period from May 1 through July 31 last year, a whopping 4,093 smell complaints were logged, according to an analysis by The Post \u2014 a marked increase from the same period in 2024, which saw 3,756 calls.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, the city logged a gag-inducing total of 15,322 odor-related complaints, with categories ranging from\u00a0\u201csewer odor\u201d to \u201cpigeon odor,\u201d plus fumes emanating from \u201cnail salons\u201d and \u201cfood vendors.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The top five olfactory infractions were for vehicle idling (5,381 complaints), chemical\/gases and vapors (2,812), sewage odor (1,487), chemical odor (1,357) and sewer odor (1,202). <\/p>\n<p>According to a spokesperson from the New York State Department of Environmental Protection, chemical gases, vapors and odors all generally refer to the same thing \u2014 smells resembling familiar chemicals, like cleaners, gasoline, tar or paint products \u2014 rather than more common everyday odors people may be more accustomed to, such as garbage, exhaust and animal waste.<\/p>\n<p>The state DEP itself received just over 11,200 odor complaints in 2025, compared to more than 10,600 in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>New York City is home to a symphony of different smells. <span class=\"credit\">Christopher Sadowski for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Perhaps it\u2019s no wonder the Big, Rotten Apple was named 2025\u2019s third-smelliest US city by online retailer Prilla, only out-stunk by No. 1 Houston and No. 2 Los Angeles \u2014 although NYC posted far more sewage complaints than the winner, according to Secret NYC.<\/p>\n<p>Wondering whether <em>your<\/em> neighborhood was among the worst-smelling last year? <\/p>\n<p>Below are NYC\u2019s top 2025 offenders seemingly in need of a hose-down \u2014 either that, or their residents just enjoy raising a <em>stink<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grimes Square + Smell\u2019s Kitchen<\/h2>\n<p>If you can\u2019t stand the stench, get out of the Kitchen, we guess.<\/p>\n<p>In the realm of offensive ZIP codes, none wage an assault on the shnoz like 10036, encompassing Times Square, the Theater District and parts of Hell\u2019s Kitchen. (One neighborhood inhabitant being the uber-aware Post newsroom.)<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Times Square has been a hotbed of fumes from idling vehicles. <span class=\"credit\">Christopher Sadowski<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>The putrid district logged a nostril-singeing 1,648 complaints in 2025, 1,378 of which were related to fumes from vehicle idling. The numbers were a bit skewed, however, as the lion\u2019s share of those interestingly hailed from 680 Eighth Ave., which is the address of the Times Eatery deli (no judgments!) and, according to a spokesperson from the NYS DEP, an otherwise heavily trafficked area\u00a0near the Port Authority Bus Terminal.<\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, this comes as an increasing number of people are joining the Big Apple\u2019s Citizen Idling Complaint Program, which inspires self-appointed vigilantes to snitch on idling trucks for cash \u2014 a pastime that\u2019s proven highly lucrative for some.<\/p>\n<p>One street snitch, Patrick Schnell, has reportedly pocketed $582,800 since the program\u2019s debut in 2019 by filming trucks idling for more than three minutes, then sending his clips to the city and collecting checks worth up to 50% of the vehicles\u2019 ensuing fines.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turning Green<\/h2>\n<p>Greenpoint has got the funk, too, records show. The industrial chic neighborhood recorded 267 smell complaints last year, with 110 related to animal odors, although the NYS DEP could not specify the exact animal sources.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Greenpoint, Brooklyn, logged more than 100 animal odor complaints in 2025. <span class=\"credit\">Paul Martinka<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Residents have long been railing about the epidemic of entitled dog owners who refuse to pick up their pets\u2019 excrement, leaving a veritable manure minefield on the streets.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s shocking to me how some people are ok leaving human-sized dog s\u2013t in the middle of the sidewalk, complained one fed-up Redditor earlier this year. \u201cIt\u2019s so disgusting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ridiculous entitlement of dog owners in North Greenpoint really degrades the area,\u201d another lamented.<\/p>\n<p>Others noted that the problem persists despite the abundance of doggy bag dispensers. \u201cIt\u2019s not a poop bag having problem,\u201d they said. \u201cIt\u2019s an abundance of lazy a\u2013hole problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On a more positive note, Greenpointers were able to exhale a bit in December after an asphalt recycling center \u2014 famous for spewing\u00a0noxious fumes through the trendy nabe \u2014 closed off its stinky ports.<\/p>\n<p>The facility, Green Asphalt, had been forced to shutter after it failed to raise its smokestacks by a state-mandated deadline. However, its closure is likely only temporary.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Big trouble in \u2018Little Odessa\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Even the fresh, salty air of the seaside can\u2019t mask the stink in Brooklyn\u2019s 11235, which comprises Brighton Beach, Sheepshead Bay and Manhattan Beach.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Brighton Beach has been an epicenter of chemical odors. <span class=\"credit\">Stefano Giovannini<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Popular among fisherfolk and beachcombers, the fragrant seaside getaway was wracked by 243 smell complaints, 96 of which were related to chemical vapors and odors.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the actual origins of chemical odors are \u201cextremely hard to trace in outdoor air because they\u2019re intermittent and usually dissipate before investigators can identify a source,\u201d according to a state DEP spokesperson.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Queens of the stink age<\/h2>\n<p>Also under assault from nasal chemical warfare was 11364, the Bayside and Littleneck, Queens, area. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A Long Island Railroad train in Bayside, Queens. <span class=\"credit\">Oliya Scootercaster\/FreedomNewsTV<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There were 220 smell complaints in 2025, with 182 relating to chemical odor.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s safe to say they could use an air freshener.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taking out the trash<\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, airing out NYC has proven a monumental task, given the symphony of smells.<\/p>\n<p>However, the city has made some strides. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Empire Bins in NYC. <span class=\"credit\">Christopher Sadowski<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Along with the idling vehicle program and the shuttering of the Greenpoint asphalt plant, we\u2019re also clamping down on one major source of the NYC stench: garbage.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced plans to expand the \u201ccontainerization\u201d program \u2014 a key initiative of his predecessor, Eric Adams \u2014 to six districts, bringing garbage bins to 25,000\u00a0residences in larger buildings\u00a0across NYC.<\/p>\n<p>While the expansion won\u2019t be up and running until 2027, buildings with one to nine residential units will be required to use special city bins for trash starting this June, according to NYC.gov.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, New Yorkers have already ordered 1 million bins since they were rolled out in 2024, which has resulted in a reduction in rat sightings and a lower likelihood of whiffing <em>eau de trash<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact is, the \u2018hot garbage smell\u2019 is actually far, far less prevalent today than it has been in the past, thanks to our\u00a0containerization programs,\u201d said NYC Department of Sanitation spokesman Joshua Goodman in 2024.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
