height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>North Carolina State graduates were in for a surprise when their commencement speaker vowed to erase some of their student debt, offering the class \u201cgreater freedom\u201d to pursue their goals. <\/p>\n<p>Anil Kochhar, the son of a notable late NC State alumnus, revealed that he and his wife, Marilyn, would pay off all final-year loans for the graduates during the Wilson College of Textiles commencement ceremony in Raleigh on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is my privilege to announce today that, in honor of my father Prakash Chand Kochhar, Marilyn and I are providing a graduation gift to cover all the final-year education loans incurred by Wilson College graduates during the 2025\u201326 academic year,\u201d Kochhar announced.<\/p>\n<p>The emotional gift honored Kochhar\u2019s late father, Prakash Chand Kochhar, who traveled from Punjab, India, to Raleigh in 1946 to study textile manufacturing at NC State.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Anil Kochhar announced to a North Carolina State graduating class he would be wiping out their final-year student debt. <span class=\"credit\">ABC 11<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The crowd erupted in cheers and gave the Kochhars a standing ovation as stunned students realized their senior-year loans were gone.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cMarilyn and I hope that all of you leave Reynolds Coliseum today not only with a degree but with greater freedom to pursue your goals, take risks and build the lives you\u2019ve worked so hard to achieve,\u201d Kochhar added.<\/p>\n<p>The graduating class consisted of 176 students who received their bachelor\u2019s degree and another 26 earned a master\u2019s degree, according to Axios Raleigh, <\/p>\n<p>For many students, the surprise payout could mean a dramatically different future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a daughter of immigrants, this money helps me and my family a lot, and I\u2019m really fortunate to have an opportunity like this,\u201d Alyssa D\u2019Costa, a fashion and textile management major, told the university. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The crowd erupted in cheers and gave Kochhar and his wife Marilyn a standing ovation. <span class=\"credit\">ABC 11<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Prakash Chand Kochhar arrived in Raleigh on a scholarship to attend the then School of Textiles, where he was believed to be only the second Indian student ever to enroll at the university.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to earn bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees from the school and build a career that took him around the world before his unexpected death in 1985.<\/p>\n<p>The Kochhar family has made several major donations to the college in recent years, including scholarships and funding for faculty and graduate programs \u2014 but Friday\u2019s graduation surprise may have been their most memorable gift yet.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Kochhar congratulates Wilson College students on the podium during their graduation. <span class=\"credit\">ABC 11<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMy father could not have imagined this moment. Not just me standing here, but all of you sitting here,\u201d Kochhar said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA new generation, shaped by a different world, but connected by the same spirit of possibility that brought him here decades ago. And that\u2019s what today represents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEighty years ago, a young man traveled thousands of miles from India to Raleigh with little more than hope and determination,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe could not have known where that journey would lead.
