Lorey, a prominent \u201cSave Girls\u2019 Sports\u201d activist in the state, organized a similar protest at the same round last year, bringing national attention to the state playoffs. The issue eventually caught the attention of President\u00a0Donald Trump, who, in a Truth Social post, called out Gov. Gavin Newsom for his state\u2019s continued policies that allowed biological males to compete in girls\u2019 sports.<\/p>\n<p>Fox News Digital sent a request to Newsom\u2019s office for a response to the upcoming protest and competition involving the trans athlete.<\/p>\n<p>A source at the governor\u2019s office provided a statement to Fox News Digital in response.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A prominent \u201cSave Girls\u2019 Sports\u201d activist in California is organizing the protest at the sporting contest Saturday. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe Governor has said discussions on this issue should be guided by fairness, dignity, and respect. He rejects the right wing\u2019s cynical attempt to weaponize this debate as an excuse to vilify individual kids. The Governor\u2019s position is simple: stand with all kids and stand up to bullies,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia\u00a0is\u00a0one\u00a0of 22 states that have laws requiring students be permitted to participate in sex-segregated school sports consistent with their gender identity. California passed\u00a0this law\u00a0in 2013 (AB 1266) and it was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fox News Digital has reached out to the trans athlete\u2019s school district, the Jurupa Unified School District (JUSD), for a response.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>AB Hernandez is a transgender senior athlete at Jurupa Valley High School in California. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Trump\u2019s Department of Justice\u00a0is engaged in Title IX lawsuits against education agencies in California for its policies that allow trans athletes in girls\u2019 high school sports. The lawsuit was officially launched in July after JVHS\u2019s trans athlete won two state finals in triple jump and high jump, and won second place in long jump, at last year\u2019s championships.<\/p>\n<p>Then in the fall came a\u00a0controversial girls\u2019 volleyball season\u00a0involving that same trans athlete. Three now-former JVHS female volleyball players filed a Title IX lawsuit against the JUSD for allowing the trans athlete to be on the girls\u2019 team and in the girls\u2019 locker room. Multiple opposing teams forfeited to JVHS throughout the season.<\/p>\n<p>JUSD was in communication with Newsom\u2019s office regarding the state\u2019s Title IX legal battle against the Trump administration earlier that same September, amid growing national attention as opposing volleyball teams forfeited to JVHS, seemingly in protest of the trans athlete.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Former NCAA women\u2019s soccer player Sophia Lorey addresses the crowd at a rally for female athletes. <span class=\"credit\">Sophia Lorey\/X<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Newsom\u2019s Legal Affairs Secretary David Sapp sent an email to district administrators on Sept. 8 that appeared to include a copy of the state\u2019s motion to dismiss a lawsuit, filed by Trump\u2019s DOJ in July, over the\u00a0CIF\u2019s continued policies\u00a0that allow males in girls\u2019 sports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs discussed, please see attached for a copy of the motion to dismiss that we filed on Friday in USDOJ\u2019s lawsuit around Title IX,\u201d Sapp\u2019s email wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The email was forwarded by one district administrator to others, to be discussed at a meeting on Sept. 12. The exchange also appeared to indicate school administrators recently discussed the issue with Sapp himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can let the team know that [JUSD administrator] &amp; I received this from David Sapp with the Governor\u2019s office on Monday when discussing the issue with them and we\u2019re passing it along in case it is helpful for our discussion today,\u201d the email wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fox News Digital requested minutes and transcripts from the Sept. 12 meeting that the administrator\u2019s email referenced from JUSD. The school district responded claiming it had no records it could share from the meeting.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Gov. Dave followed up to share a copy of the State\u2019s Motion to Dismiss, which had been filed the week before and was otherwise publicly available. Dave did not give the district any directives or suggestions regarding its handling of the transgender athlete situation or related media interactions,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s administration cracked down with a more targeted investigation of JUSD in January.
