floating a tax on electric-vehicle owners during Tuesday night\u2019s gubernatorial debate.<\/p>\n<p>Mahan proposed the levy, along with a tax on high-income earners, while pushing to suspend the higher-income owners are paying their fair share,\u201d said Mahan, a moderate Democrat who\u2019s gotten support from Silicon Valley.<\/p>\n<p>It marks the first time he has publicly mentioned a charge on electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Mahan has been loudly advocating for a suspension of the gas tax \u2014 a point Republican candidate Steve Hilton noted during the debate that he has also supported.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<p>\u201cI grew up in a farming town. I know what it means when the cost of gas goes up a dollar,\u201d Mahan continued. \u201cPeople start actually having to make really tough trade-offs. Can you pay the rent? Can you put food on the table?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, federal tax credits of up to $7,500 are available for the purchase of all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. <\/p>\n<p>In California, EV drivers are subject to a $121 annual road-improvement fee upon registering their vehicles to make up for lost gas taxes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><button relief,\u201d the description reads, without referencing any proposed taxes on EVs.<\/p>\n<p>The California Post contacted Mahan\u2019s campaign for further comment.<\/p>\n<p>Mahan\u00a0is currently polling on the lower end among the top qualifying candidates for governor.
