Alan Shearer does not place him among the greats.<\/p>\n<p>The Portuguese midfielder has been an integral part of the Red Devils team since he arrived from Sporting in January 2020.<\/p>\n<p>He has racked up 324 appearances in all competitions and scored 106 goals, while he is fast climbing the all-time assists chart in the Premier League.<\/p>\n<p>The 31-year-old has laid on 70 goals in the top flight, 18th in Premier League history and with big names ahead of him and in his sights.<\/p>\n<p>Only Ryan Giggs (270), Wayne Rooney (142) and David Beckham (121) have provided more assists for the Red Devils in all competitions than Fernandes (102).<\/p>\n<p>What is holding Fernandes back in the eyes of Shearer is the period in Manchester United\u2019s history in which he is playing.<\/p>\n<p>It has not been a vintage Red Devils team at any stage of his career in England and even though he has been the star performer, it has not been enough to pull in trophies on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/GettyImages-2263711541.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28245283\" alt=\"Manchester United v Crystal Palace - Premier League\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Fernandes has been in fine form (Picture: Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>His only silverware since moving to Old Trafford is an FA Cup and one League Cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There\u2019s no doubt Man United wouldn\u2019t be where they are if it wasn\u2019t for Bruno Fernandes and I think he\u2019s stood out in a poor team,\u2019 Shearer told Betfair.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018They\u2019ve had a tough time of late over the previous years, but I think what would define him is the trophies he has or hasn\u2019t won with them.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The all-time record Premier League goal-scorer continued: \u2018When you see Man United greats, when you\u2019re comparing him to the likes of Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and David Beckham, these guys who have won the treble and won trophies before that.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/GettyImages-2265509845.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28245312\" alt=\"Newcastle United FC v FC Barcelona - UEFA Champions League 2025\/26 Round of 16 First Leg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Alan Shearer feels greatness is out of Fernandes\u2019 hands, to some extent (Picture: Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019d be reluctant to talk about him being one of the Man United greats, but that\u2019s through no fault of his own.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I think he\u2019s massively stood out this year and is up for the Player of the Year award.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Fernandes has emerged as the bookmakers\u2019 favourite to be the Premier League\u2019s PFA Player of the Year this season, ahead of Declan Rice, Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva.<\/p>\n<p>He has scored eight goals and provided 19 assists, really flourishing since Michael Carrick took over as manager in January, as the whole team has.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/GettyImages-2256124518.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28245923\" alt=\"Manchester United v Manchester City - Premier League\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Michael Carrick has unleashed Bruno Fernandes further up field than Ruben Amorim did (Picture: Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The interim boss coached Fernandes when he worked under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and knew what to expect from him when he took the top job.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019ve known Bruno a long time and worked with him when he was here, when he came to the club, so it hasn\u2019t surprised me,\u2019 said the former England midfielder.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I knew exactly what he could bring.
