Ron DeSantis is crisscrossing the country as he lays the groundwork for an increasingly likely 2028 presidential campaign \u2014 refining his pitch, building relationships and working to move past his bruising 2024 defeat by President Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The term-limited Sunshine State governor, 47, started the week by joining business leaders at the Milken Institute\u2019s global conference in Beverly Hills and will keynote the New York Republican Party\u2019s May 19 annual gala at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in my mid-40s. [20]28, you know, maybe beyond that, I think that there\u2019s a lot of runway,\u201d DeSantis said Monday when asked if he would run for president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho knows? Like, you never know,\u201d he told The Post\u2019s Charles Gasparino during a moderated discussion, before launching into what sounded like a campaign pitch.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, seen at a White House college sports event in March, is laying the groundwork to run for president. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWho took a state that had more Democrats than Republicans by 300,000 when he got elected [in 2018], and now has 1.5 million more Republicans?\u201d DeSantis asked, referring to himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho had a state that had a trillion-dollar economy and now has $1.8 trillion? Who has a state that had some school choice, now universal? A 50-year low in the crime rate? So we\u2019ve got a good story to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Republican insider told The Post of the Florida governor that \u201cit\u2019s not been a secret he\u2019s running.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI think DeSantis totally thinks he can win,\u201d said a GOP operative who frequently is in Florida. \u201cHe\u2019d be top two in Iowa for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Trump himself seems to have moved past the bad blood of the 2024 campaign, from which DeSantis withdrew following a distant second-place finish in the Iowa caucuses, some of his allies would welcome a chance to take down his fellow Floridian \u2014 again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeam Trump is chomping at the bit to destroy DeSantis one more time,\u201d a longtime Trump operative told The Post. <\/p>\n<p>When DeSantis launched his first campaign for the White House three years ago this month, he was viewed as a rising star who could redirect Trump\u2019s disruptive populism into an even-keeled agenda of low-tax, low-regulation business stewardship coupled with conservative social policies.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Secretary of State Marco Rubio, second lady Usha Vance and Vice President JD Vance, who is considered the front-runner for the 2028 GOP nomination. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over the past year, DeSantis has been busy repairing his relationship with the president and is even considered to be a possible cabinet pick next year when he departs Tallahassee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis lane is: most competent and effective governor in our nation\u2019s history who consistently delivers on every promise he makes,\u201d said DeSantis\u2019 former national spokesperson Christina Pushaw, who described the governor as having significant potential appeal to independents.<\/p>\n<p>The GOP operative frequently in Florida agreed that \u201ca lot of people like DeSantis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a guy that I believe sees there\u2019s a window to run for president, you don\u2019t know how long it stays open, and once it\u2019s closed, that\u2019s it,\u201d this person said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>DeSantis, seen shaking Trump\u2019s hand last year during a visit to \u201cAlligator Alcatraz\u201d for criminal illegal immigrants, has worked to improve his relationship with the president. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>DeSantis signed legislation in March to rename West Palm Beach\u2019s airport in Trump\u2019s honor, on the heels of facilitating the construction of Trump\u2019s presidential library in Miami.<\/p>\n<p>In one of his biggest deliveries yet for Trump, DeSantis signed a bill on Monday to redraft Florida\u2019s congressional districts, giving Republicans an anticipated four-seat gain in the November midterm elections \u2014 offsetting a likely four-district loss in Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>The aggressive redistricting move guards against a possible Democratic takeover of the House, which would result in Trump\u2019s anticipated third impeachment, the end of his legislative agenda and an array of other investigations.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis golfed with Trump in February and March \u2014 publicly showing there\u2019s no bad blood despite the president ruthlessly mocking him with the nicknames \u201cDeSanctimonious\u201d and \u201cMeatball Ron\u201d during the 2024 primary campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Many Trump loyalists remain wary, however, and the governor would face stiff competition in 2028.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>DeSantis on Monday signed legislation improving Republican odds of holding the House in the midterm elections. <span class=\"credit\">Ron DeSantis \/ X<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Polling shows that Vice President JD Vance is currently best-positioned to succeed Trump. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also viewed as a possible front-runner and others, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), are likely to at least explore campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>Lately, \u201cyou hear a lot more about Rubio. Rubio is the guy,\u201d the Florida operative said. \u201cVance has his pockets, but overwhelmingly Rubio is the guy among most people \u2026 even, say, in Palm Beach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s JD\u2019s race to lose right now,\u201d suggested a former DeSantis staffer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat said, there\u2019s a million new cycles between now and a primary \u2014 anything can happen with a coalition that\u2019s showing cracks.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Trump, who has jokingly teased his own 2028 campaign, is likely to be a kingmaker in the Republican primaries. <span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The former aide said that \u201cDeSantis is by far the most effective, results-driven conservative executive in recent memory, but it remains to be seen if his team learned the right lessons from the [2024] campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe country would be better off in every way should he stay on the national stage,\u201d the ex-aide said. \u201cThe moves he makes in the coming months should be very revealing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis, born in 1978, is the son of a TV rating box installer who played baseball at Yale University before graduating from Harvard Law School in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>He often plays up his humble origins, joking as recently as Monday about showing up to class in New Haven wearing jean shorts, a T-shirt and flip flops.<\/p>\n<p>Before entering politics, DeSantis served in the Navy, including in Iraq. In 2012, he was elected to represent the Daytona Beach area in the US House, then narrowly beat Democrat Andrew Gillum in 2018 to become governor. He cruised to a nearly 20-point reelection win in 2022 against Charlie Crist, the state\u2019s former Republican governor who ran as a Democrat.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MAGA not sold \u2014 despite Cabinet buzz<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019s candidacy in 2024 broke with Trump on many issues, and the president\u2019s loyalists remain skeptical \u2014 noting the governor\u2019s perceived social awkwardness that led to public scrutiny of everything from his choice of footwear to the timbre of his laugh.<\/p>\n<p>As a candidate, DeSantis accused Trump of \u201crunning to the left\u201d on economic, immigration and abortion policy and faulted him for listening to Dr. Anthony Fauci\u2019s COVID-19 pandemic shutdown guidance. He didn\u2019t push for sweeping global tariffs and vowed to move on from the \u201cdaily drama\u201d of Trump.<\/p>\n<p>After lapping the GOP primary field, Trump won a second non-consecutive term, winning the national popular vote and an Electoral College landslide.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s comeback campaign was masterminded by Florida political veteran Susie Wiles, an ex-DeSantis aide whom the governor fired in 2019 despite her role in helping him win his office the prior year.<\/p>\n<p>Insiders insist Wiles, now White House chief of staff and the most powerful aide to the president, doesn\u2019t hold a grudge against DeSantis.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Trump ruthlessly mocked DeSantis when they faced off in the 2024 election. <span class=\"credit\">Piers Morgan Uncensored<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSusie isn\u2019t in the business of holding grudges. She leaves that kind of baggage at the door and shows up every day to serve the president,\u201d the Trump operative insisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there\u2019s any issue from the past with Ron, it\u2019s because his social awareness peaked around the age of show-and-tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump himself told reporters last month that he\u2019s open to naming the governor to his cabinet because \u201cI think he\u2019s good \u2014 doing a good job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The current betting is that DeSantis likely won\u2019t join the administration, despite speculation he could be either attorney general or war secretary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want to be defense secretary in the Republican Party, where a lot of the voters aren\u2019t necessarily as gung ho about this war stuff, and you have a president who seems willing to go into war?\u201d the GOP operative often in Florida said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do think there\u2019s reason to think that that\u2019s not the right position to be in if you want to run for president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A former Trump White House official said that the attorney general role \u201cmade the most sense,\u201d but added that acting attorney general Todd Blanche is \u201cdoing well\u201d and may fill the position permanently \u2014 while the move could be \u201cdumb tactically\u201d for DeSantis.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Trump\u2019s allies say the governor is socially awkward and not likely to win over Trump\u2019s political movement.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The governor still has many opponents among the president\u2019s core political team, even if Trump, the likely GOP king-maker in 2028, has warmed to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter how many influencers he pays off, Ron will never be the heir to the MAGA movement,\u201d the longtime Trump operative told The Post. <\/p>\n<p>The former White House official, meanwhile, scoffed at the governor\u2019s shifting approach to Trump, calling DeSantis \u201cas authentic as a strip mall Santa.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is among the likely candidates in the 2028 GOP primaries. <span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Still, Trump has made a habit of pulling former enemies into his orbit.<\/p>\n<p>Rubio and Trump, for example, traded attacks in 2016, with the then-Florida senator even making vulgar insinuations about the future president\u2019s hand size. Trump has since given Rubio an ever-mounting number of administration roles and mentions him as a possible successor alongside Vance.<\/p>\n<p>The president also gave DeSantis a shout-out at a college athletics panel discussion in March at the White House.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRon DeSantis has been working very hard with us,\u201d the president raved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWherever you may be, Ron \u2014 Hi, Ron!
