The Post\u2019s Alex Mitchell tried, but came up a pancake short. <span class=\"credit\">Heather Khalifa for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had well over 400 tries, with a success rate of probably 10% or around 40.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Josh Holland-Weiss was one of many who fell into the eyes-bigger-than-stomach trap when he tried and went viral for the challenge on hit Instagram page Long Island Wiseguy last month.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWhen those pancakes came out, I was like, \u2018Oh man, I was in over my head with this one,\u201d admitted the 22-year-old from Port Jefferson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are much bigger in person than they look.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tale of the taste is this: customers have 18 minutes to fully consume four of Nappi\u2019s flapjacks, which he estimates individually weigh between 10 and 14 ounces, are close to 3 inches tall each, and total around 3,000 calories.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can do whatever you want to the pancakes. You can put some toppings in them\u2026I don\u2019t start the timer until you\u2019re ready to cut in. We\u2019ll let you dress it, we\u2019ll let you put syrup and butter on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI picked 18 minutes because it costs $18, so you get a dollar a minute,\u201d added Nappi, who began the challenge three years ago at the suggestion of a worker.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The massive pancakes take about twice as long to cook as the average flapjack. <span class=\"credit\">Heather Khalifa for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The rare winners earn a free meal, a desktop-sized trophy, and a picture on the diner\u2019s wall of fame next to the front door. It\u2019s mostly college-aged guys and fitness buffs, plus one senior citizen who\u2019s claimed victory. <\/p>\n<p>So far, no woman has won but Nappi said he would eagerly throw in a $30 gift card to celebrate the first female winner.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Co-owner Steve Nappi said the pancake challenge is often underestimated before challengers actually see the stack on a plate. <span class=\"credit\">Heather Khalifa for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The breakfast joint has special metal stovetop rings for the gargantuan griddlecakes to take shape and cook in about double the time it takes for an average pancake.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If the generous portion of batter overflows, cooks have a pizza cutter handy to shave off the excess.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do tell people, hopefully they have nothing better to do the rest of the day except sit on the couch,\u201d Nappi laughed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The breakfast club<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>There have only been about 40 of an estimated 400 to beat the challenge. <span class=\"credit\">Heather Khalifa for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Coming out victorious in the breakfast battle doesn\u2019t have a one-size-fits-all approach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen people roll them up to eat. I\u2019ve seen people make it like a taco, I\u2019ve seen people do the Joey Chestnut style, dipping it in water,\u201d Nappi said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody has their own technique.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Challengers have 18 minutes to eat four Nappi\u2019s flapjacks that weigh approximately 10 to 14 ounces, are nearly 3 inches tall, and total close to 3,000 calories. <span class=\"credit\">Heather Khalifa for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The co-owner \u2014 who\u2019s never worked up the gall to try himself \u2014 observed that the most successful attempts are \u201cthe drier, the better.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Loading up the flapjacks with syrup and butter turns them into digestive quicksand that stops eaters dead in their tracks, he warned.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Josh Holland-Weiss recently set the record at just under nine minutes. <span class=\"credit\">Heather Khalifa for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Holland-Weiss became the chow down champ by setting a jaw-dropping 8:58-second record, far ahead of the second-best time of 10:35, and light-years away from the many near 18-minute buzzer beaters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody in the restaurant was clapping and all of that \u2013 it kind of put in perspective how many people were watching,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The human resources professional pulled out all the stops.
