height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>She\u2019s back in the cyclist\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n<p>A former school bus driver will be burning rubber across the Big Apple this weekend as part of the 5 Boro Bike Tour \u2014 marking a major milestone since a traumatic brain injury forced the avid cyclist to learn to ride all over again.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia Hochhauser is more eager to ride over the curvature of the Verrazano Bridge than the finish line, saying the iconic bridge that looms over her native Dyker Heights serves as a reminder of the rider she was before her terrifying scooter crash.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Patricia Hochhauser will be riding in the 5 Boro Hike Tour nearly 19 months after sustaining a traumatic brain injury. <span class=\"credit\">Stephen Yang for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThat would be like I accomplished something \u2014 \u2018I survived, I made it,&#8217;\u201d Patricia, 56, told The Post ahead of the 40-mile race.<\/p>\n<p>The Sunday tour around the Big Apple lands on the 19-month anniversary of the day Patricia\u2019s life changed forever.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>She and her husband, Harold, have been avid cyclists throughout their 16-year relationship, typically hitting the pavement up to five times per week \u2014 but they always left their helmets at home.<\/p>\n<p>They were testing out their new electric scooter on Oct. 4, 2024, in a parking lot near their home when Patricia suddenly lost control and smashed headfirst into the ground, landing her with a subdural hematoma, concussion and a wound that required 15 staples.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Patricia called Harold her \u201csuperpower.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Stephen Yang for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Crossing the Verrazano Bridge will serve as a reminder that \u201cI survived, I made it,\u201d said Patricia. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy The Hochhausers<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Brooklynite\u2019s head trauma came with brain fog and severe vertigo that made it nearly impossible to walk, forcing her to acquire a home health aide to complete tasks as simple as using the bathroom.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia\u2019s memory was fuzzy, with vacations, family members\u2019 faces and other details slipping from her brain \u2014 but one thing she easily recalled was her love of cycling.<\/p>\n<p>After 6 months and several rounds of treatment, Patricia\u2019s doctor gave the green light to get back on the bike, but she needed to learn how to ride all over again.<\/p>\n<p>Harold \u2014 whom Patricia called her \u201csuperpower\u201d \u2014 put training wheels on her trusty bicycle and ran alongside her as she slowly peddled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe training wheels were just to make her feel comfortable because things can happen so quickly. I also bought her the number one-rated helmet at the time! Safety all the way,\u201d Harold said.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia was overcome with emotion, saying she cried when she got back on the bike.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The couple have been avid cyclists throughout their 16-year-long relationship.  <span class=\"credit\">Stephen Yang for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI always enjoyed riding my bike. I always enjoyed that activity with my husband and I didn\u2019t want to lose it. I wanted to get it back,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Some people pointed and giggled, and at least one young girl asked Patricia why an adult needed the wheels \u2014 and the Brooklynite seized the opportunity to talk about the dangers of not wearing a helmet.<\/p>\n<p>Although physically healed, Patricia continues to suffer \u201cbrain zaps\u201d that wake her in the middle of the night, intense vertigo and memory issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat poor decision I\u2019m still paying for,\u201d said Patricia. \u201cWho knows if I\u2019ll ever get my memory back? Who knows if I\u2019ll ever be normal? I always tell my husband I didn\u2019t die that day, but part of me did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was only one month before the training wheels came off \u2014 and six months later, Patricia and Harold tackled the 50-mile Tour de Yonkers ride.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Patricia spent a month learning to ride again with the help of training wheels. <span class=\"credit\">Stephen Yang for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While the 5 Boro ride is shorter, the race has emotional ties for the Hochhausers, who have spent countless rides on the path beneath the Verrazano Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to show up there at the starting line with my helmet, number one, my enthusiasm and my husband. Because I know if I can\u2019t make it up that bridge, he\u2019s going to be there to help me, like he\u2019s been through the whole thing,\u201d said Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>Harold has no doubt his wife can handle the steep bridge, adding: \u201cMy wife\u2019s a fighter, and I know she\u2019s going to be able to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
