Only a handful have managed to leave in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>If the Maritime Information Cooperation and Awareness Center (MICA center) detects any form of bombardment, it immediately sends nearby ships \u2014 container ships, cargo vessels and cruise liners \u2014 \u00a0an encrypted message.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe share the nature of the event, its context and exact position,\u201d commanding officer Thomas Scalabre tells AFP in a basement in the French city of Brest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can respond quickly, moving away from the danger if there are shots or debris, or even turn off their transponders so as not to be detected,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>This information is sent within a radius of 50 nautical miles. For comparison, the strait itself is 29 nautical miles wide at its narrowest point.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Rules \u2018very unclear\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>The information on the MICA center\u2019s monitoring screens is a mixture of satellite images, ship locations emitted by their transponders, and information shared by crews at sea.<\/p>\n<p>It provides help to 85 maritime transport companies, including French group CMA CGM and Danish giant Maersk.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond threats from the Middle East war, the MICA center also tracks the rest of the world\u2019s waters \u2014 including Yemeni rebel missile and drone attacks in the Red Sea, piracy off Somalia, and drug smuggling.<\/p>\n<p>MICA has recorded around 40 security incidents, including 24 Iranian direct attacks on commercial vessels since February 28, some of them deadly, Scalabre says.<\/p>\n<p>France and the United Kingdom have pledged to set up a peaceful coalition to re-open the Strait of Hormuz \u2014 but it is not to operate until after the conflict is resolved. Peace talks have stalled in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, \u201cthe rules Iran imposes on navigation remain very unclear and are constantly shifting,\u201d Scalabre says, including with regards to which ships the Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) might decide to single out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t necessarily any logic in the IRGC\u2019s targeting policy. We\u2019ve seen many different nationalities and types of vessels\u201d being targeted, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2018Mosquito fleet\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>IRGC gunboats on April 18 fired at India-flagged tanker Sanmar Herald without prior radio contact, security intelligence firm Vanguard Tech reported, despite India being viewed as a \u201cfriend\u201d of Iran, as are China, Russia, Iraq and Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>Iran also claims to have laid sea mines in the main part of the waterway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat matters is the psychological effect. No one will take the risk of venturing there,\u201d Scalabre says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tehran can authorise some ships to leave the Gulf or enter it via the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>But \u201ceven when they obtain it, the IRGC\u2019s \u2018mosquito fleet\u2019 can emerge to block their way,\u201d Scalabre says.<\/p>\n<p>In his office, the commanding officer enlarges an image showing a swarm of speedboats carrying out such an attack.<\/p>\n<p>A dozen Iranian patrol boats burst forth, carving white foamy wakes behind them as they encircle and seize a vessel before it can leave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey sometimes carry out indiscriminate attacks, whether the country is considered friendly or not,\u201d the French navy officer says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Tehran, controlling the Strait of Hormuz remains one of its trump cards to exert pressure and negotiate\u201d a way out of the conflict, he adds.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
