Her marriage was failing and her husband was fighting her for the house and the kids.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the mom who seemed to have it all is accused of slaughtering her two young children \u2013 leaving even those close to her reeling about how such horror could allegedly hide in plain sight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I heard the news, it was probably the biggest shock of my life,\u201d one of MacAusland\u2019s friends told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Kai, 7, and Ella, 6, MacAusland were found dead inside their family\u2019s Wellesley home last week \u2014 where their mom allegedly confessed to strangling them.  <span class=\"credit\">Janette Reber \/ Facebook<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t process it. I\u2019m still trying to reckon with it. It doesn\u2019t make sense. There was nothing that would point to something like this.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI think I\u2019m going to be trying to reckon with it for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The friend, who wished to remain anonymous, described MacAusland as \u201cgentle, kind, with-it and personable\u201d in both her professional and personal life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was an acupuncturist, meditation teacher,\u201d the pal said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe talked about her kids like any normal mother would. It really seemed like she loved them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Even those close to MacAusland are reeling about how such horror could allegedly hide in plain sight.  <span class=\"credit\">Janette Reber \/ Facebook<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Just six months ago, MacAusland was discussing parent-teacher conferences for her towheaded children \u2013 Kai, 7, and Ella, 6.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a stark contrast to what authorities say happened last week, when MacAusland allegedly confessed to strangling the children inside the family\u2019s $1.5 million home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was completely shocked,\u201d said the source, who recalled reading online about MacAusland\u2019s arrest at her aunt\u2019s house in Vermont.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was nearly impossible to reconcile the woman they knew with the person in MacAusland\u2019s chilling mugshot, which shows grisly cuts across her throat, the source said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And \u201cnothing seemed off\u201d the last time they spoke about two weeks ago, they added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, there were dark parts of MacAusland\u2019s life she kept private \u2013 including her estranged husband and a bitter divorce and custody battle that had been playing out behind the scenes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She and her husband Samuel, 62, were locked in the contentious split after he filed for a divorce last October, citing an \u201cirretrievable breakdown\u201d of their nine-year marriage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both parents were fighting for full custody of the children, as well as control of their leafy suburban home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>MacAusland and her husband\u2019s recent divorce and custody battle are a stark contrast to photos that show happier times in their nine-year marriage. <span class=\"credit\">@rebervations\/Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Photos from happier times show the couple smiling together on date nights and spending quality time with their kids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>MacAusland once even posted a sweet photo of her husband in bed with the kids, alongside the caption: \u201cHappy Father\u2019s Day to every dad that shows up. And this one, shows up BIGTIME!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But their legal battle reportedly intensified in the days leading up to the senseless killings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On April 16, the parents filed a motion to have a third party weigh in on custody, leading a guardian to be appointed on April 21 \u2013 just one day before the children were killed, according to authorities\u2019 timeline of the alleged crimes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To outsiders, however, the family still appeared picture-perfect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever did I enter the house and feel like there was anything that was extremely off,\u201d the family\u2019s former babysitter, Cale Darrah, told the Boston Globe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the picturesque facade allegedly collapsed last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two days after the kids were killed, MacAusland turned up roughly 140 miles to her aunt\u2019s Bennington, Vermont, home with a grisly slash across her throat and a terrifying message: \u201cI strangled them and then I tried to kill myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A heart-wrenching tribute, complete with bouquets of flowers, candles and stuffed animals, adorned the front lawn of the family\u2019s Wellesley home.\u00a0\u00a0 <span class=\"credit\">ZUMAPRESS.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Back in Wellesley, police discovered the children\u2019s maimed bodies \u2013 a scene that reportedly left their father in shambles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For Samuel \u2013 who was described as \u201cuncontrollable\u201d while speaking to dispatchers \u2013 fatherhood \u201cwas the joy of his life,\u201d family friend Albert Bowley told the Globe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was like a piece of life he finally fulfilled,\u201d Bowley said, adding that Kai and Ella were \u201ccute as a button.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, around 500 mourners gathered at St. Andrew\u2019s Episcopal Church in Wellesley to honor the young victims.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There, parents and children alike expressed grief and confusion \u2013 with one 11-year-old even telling the Globe she was \u201cshocked\u201d and \u201cfelt a little sick\u201d after hearing what happened.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A heart-wrenching tribute complete with bouquets of flowers, candles and stuffed animals \u2013 including a large stuffed teddy bear holding a sign with \u201cKai and Ella\u201d written in children\u2019s handwriting \u2013 adorned the front lawn of the family\u2019s Wellesley home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>It was nearly impossible for the source to reconcile the woman they knew with the person in MacAusland\u2019s chilling mugshot, which shows grisly cuts across her throat.\u00a0 <span class=\"credit\">Bennington Police Department<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MacAusland, who was an acupuncturist with New England Integrated Health, is currently in custody in Vermont, where she faces a fugitive from justice charge.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During a court appearance Monday, she agreed to be expedited to Massachusetts, where she\u2019s charged with two counts of murder.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>MacAusland \u201cdecided that the best thing is to get back to Massachusetts as soon as possible and address these charges,\u201d her attorney, Jeff Rubin, reportedly said.<\/p>\n<p>Her next court appearance in the Vermont case is May 11.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async defer src=\"https:\/\/platform.instagram.com\/en_US\/embeds.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
