Intrigued, Rogal accepted the piece on consignment, figuring it might fetch between $20,000 to $30,000 at auction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe provenance was a little fuzzy,\u201d he said. \u201cBut she seemed credible. It wasn\u2019t an obvious counterfeit.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>NYC art dealer Robert Rogal, pictured with his late wife Gail, was fooled into accepting a purportedly fake Andrew Wyeth painting by father-daughter duo Erwin Bankowski and Karolina Bankowska. <span class=\"credit\">Shane Drummond\/BFA \/ Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In fact, Rogal now believes the painting was a fake \u2014 one of at least 200 carefully designed imitations that federal prosecutors say Bankowska, 26, and her father Erwin Bankowski, 50, tried to pass off to unwitting buyers.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the duo pleaded guilty to defrauding their victims \u2014 including some of New York City\u2019s most prominent fine art auction houses \u2014 of at least $2 million.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The counterfeits, which were forged in Poland by an unnamed co-conspirator, were often reproductions of lesser-known works by prominent and prolific artists, like\u00a0Banksy\u00a0and Andy Warhol, prosecutors said. <\/p>\n<p>Their most profitable fake, purportedly by the artist Richard Mayhew, was sold by the auction house DuMouchelles last October for $160,000.<\/p>\n<p>A representative for DuMouchelles said they had cooperated with federal authorities but were not authorized to discuss the sale further. Several other auction houses targeted in the scheme, including Bonhams, Phillips, Freeman\u2019s and Antique Arena, either declined or did not respond to inquiries.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A forgery of an Andrew Wyeth painting is seen at RoGallery in New York, April 28, 2026. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The father and daughter \u2014 Polish citizens living in New Jersey \u2014 face charges of wire fraud conspiracy and misrepresenting Native American\u2013produced goods, a charge stemming from their duplication of the Luise\u00f1o artist, Fritz Scholder.<\/p>\n<p>They face the possibility of more than three years in prison under federal guidelines, in addition to $1.9 million in restitution and possible deportation to Poland.<\/p>\n<p>In court on Tuesday, Bankowska told a judge that her \u201cconduct was wrong and I am guilty.\u201d Her attorney, Todd Spodek, said his client had placed more than $1 million in an escrow account.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The fraudsters\u2019 most profitable fake, purportedly by the artist Richard Mayhew, was sold by DuMouchelles for $160,000. <span class=\"credit\">U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office, Eastern District of New York<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Through a Polish interpreter, Erwin Bankowski also apologized. His attorney, Jeffrey Chabrowe, added that his client had \u201cregrettably made a terrible decision in an effort to support his family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As news of the fakes reverberated around the art world, experts described the scheme as a classic of the genre \u2014 one that is far more prevalent than some in the industry would like to admit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only unusual thing about this case is that the forgers got caught,\u201d said Erin Thompson, a professor of art crime at the City University of New York.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><figcaption>A counterfeit Banksy sold for $2,000. <span class=\"credit\">U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office, Eastern District of New York<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><figcaption>A counterfeit Andy Warhol fetched $5,500. <span class=\"credit\">U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office, Eastern District of New York<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cPeople think of the art world as a genteel place full of cultured people who just want to share the wonder of beautiful art,\u201d she added. \u201cYou should assume there are a lot more fakes out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said the father and daughter began commissioning a Polish artist in 2020 to create the fake artworks. Using antique paper, they also forged stamps to attach to the paintings, adopting the names of since-shuttered galleries where a given artist might have plausibly shown their work.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t long before the sales began to draw scrutiny. In March 2023, representatives for the artist Raimonds Staprans caught wind of a forged painting, \u201cTriple Boats,\u201d for sale by an auction house.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A counterfeit Raimonds Staprans sold for $60,000 at auction. <span class=\"credit\">U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office, Eastern District of New York<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A few days after the reps contacted the auction house, the painting sold to a buyer for $60,000, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson, the professor of art crime, noticed other irregularities as well. The gallery stamp on the back of the faked Wyeth, for example, listed its year as 1976, but included a zoning address number that had been phased out in 1962.<\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, perhaps, the fake stamp bore the name and address for M. Knoedler &amp; Co. One of New York\u2019s oldest and most esteemed commercial galleries, Knoedler closed down in 2011 amid\u00a0allegations of profiting from forgeries of paintings\u00a0by Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and others.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Rogal said he never listed the Wyeth, in part because the stamp on the back was \u201ctoo clean.\u201d When he called Bankowska and told her to pick it up, she never responded.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, in a Queens warehouse brimming with consigned art pieces, Rogal reexamined the painting under the light.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou try to do a service and provide it correctly,\u201d he said. \u201cCan we be fooled?
