He deliberately broke transactions into chunks to avoid bank scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme, dubbed the \u201cCartier Cell\u201d by feds, dates back to at least 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The jewelry heir told an undercover FBI agent he considered a New York City hotel his second home, where he handled his crypto clients, lawyers and banks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Cartier is a resident of France who moonlights as a singer under the name \u201cMax Cartier.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">X\/maxcartiermusic<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Cartier was ordered to pay $2,362,160 in forfeiture and forfeit several shell company bank accounts. <span class=\"credit\">X\/maxcartiermusic<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 2021, DEA agents seized nearly $940,000 from his accounts after funneling drug proceeds into them through an undercover operation. <\/p>\n<p>Cartier then walked into the US Attorney\u2019s office in Pennsylvania with forged business records and talked prosecutors into returning a portion of the money before agents built the case that ultimately put him away.<\/p>\n<p>Cartier, a French resident and Argentine citizen, was ordered to pay $2,362,160 in forfeiture \u2014 his cut of the laundering operation \u2014 and forfeit several shell company bank accounts.<\/p>\n<p>US Attorney John Clayton said that the Cartier \u201cexploited his knowledge of US and international financial systems to launder drug money and other crime proceeds.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cartier\u2019s social media advertises his music career, including his new single, \u201cSomos Novios.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An apparently photoshopped post from February 19, 2024, depicts Cartier sitting down with CNN for an interview;
