\u2014\u00a0backed by sobering crash data.<\/p>\n<p>The California Highway Patrol began a 24-hour \u201cMaximum Enforcement Period\u201d at 6 a.m. Tuesday, targeting motorists who push past the speed limit, according to ABC7.<\/p>\n<p>The crackdown comes after CHP officers issues more than 491,000 speeding tickets last year, while preliminary figures show speeding played a role in more than 110,000 crashes \u2014\u00a0leaving over 400 people dead and roughly 68,000 injured,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeeding continues to be one of the leading causes of serious and fatal crashes on California\u2019s roadways,\u201d CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said, warning that higher speeds reduce reaction time and increase danger for everyone on the road.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The enforcement push runs through Wednesday morning, with officers stepping up patrols statewide.<\/p>\n<p>It also coincides with a newer state effort aimed at cracking down on extreme speeding.<\/p>\n<p>Under the Forwarded Actions for Speeding Tickets \u2014\u00a0or FAST \u2014\u00a0program, drivers caught going more than 100 mph can have their cases automatically sent to the DMV, where licenses may be suspended or revoked, according to the report.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Some drivers said the stepped-up enforcement is already changing behavior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want a ticket,\u201d Cleve McWright told ABC7. \u201cI don\u2019t even want to deal with Highway Patrol, so I try to stay under the speed limit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he added that speeding remains a common sight on California roads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty bad \u2014\u00a0on the highways and even on the surface streets.\u201d McWright said.<\/p>\n<p>Another motorist said officers were already pulling drivers over nearby as the enforcement period got underway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe;re definitely employing methods to go ahead and conserve on gas,\u201d Paula said. \u201cI\u2019ve never been pulled over so I don\u2019t know what a big, fat speeding ticket looks like\u2026 maybe, like two miles bacl, they were already pulling people over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Paula the message is simple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI
