A row of car parking spaces will then be next to the median, pushing firetrucks even further into the street if a blaze erupts in the area.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The firetrucks will be so far from the sidewalk that their ladders won\u2019t be able to reach third\u2011floor windows and above, the firefighters said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPutting bike lanes in that area is going to jeopardize the lives of residents living along 31st Street because our ladders will not reach the third floor,\u201d said Astoria firefighter Mike Schreibner, also an avid cyclist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will not be able to put our ladders up to rescue people above.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the firefighters\u2019 flare\u2011up, the board gave the project a green light, and the DOT insisted Thursday it had cleared the plan with FDNY headquarters, which consulted local firehouses as the law requires.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>DOT says it cleared the bike-lane plans with FDNY headquarters. <span class=\"credit\">Luiz C. Ribeiro for New York Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cDOT worked in close collaboration with our partners at FDNY,\u00a0including on all legally required consultations to advance this redesign,\u201d a DOT rep said.<\/p>\n<p>A Fire Department representative added, \u201cThe FDNY reviewed and signed off on DOT\u2019s proposal for\u00a031st Street\u00a0in accordance with the legal process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But union leaders said City Hall is using smoke and mirrors to get the bike lanes put in.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Firefighters said they won\u2019t be able to fight blazes on third floors or above. <span class=\"credit\">Luiz C. Ribeiro for New York Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cNo fire officer in any of the affected firehouses has been notified by DOT of the revised plan,\u201d said Michael Tracey, vice president of the Uniformed Firefighters Officers Association.<\/p>\n<p>Bobby Eustace, the legislative director for the Uniformed Firefighters Association, said FDNY leaders will do whatever City Hall wants since the commissioner is appointed by the mayor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe commissioners are children of the mayor \u2014 they will not disagree with him,\u201d Eustace said. \u201cThey are not civil servants anymore. They are appointees. So you\u2019re not getting an honest answer out of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said DOT\u2019s flagrant disregard for fire safety has gotten out of hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe DOT is like the KGB. They\u2019re able to run free, and no one is able to check them. They do whatever they want,\u201d Eustace said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re being pushed to the point where there\u2019s going to be blood on the hands of DOT if they keep this up,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>DOT plans to add the protected bike lanes along 31st Street in Astoria. <span class=\"credit\">Helayne Seidman<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Queens City Councilwoman Joann Ariola sponsored Local Law 6 that stipulates local firehouses should sign-off on bikes lanes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocal firefighters are the people who know the streets best,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is mind\u2011boggling to me that the administration and the DOT are continuing to put public safety aside in pursuit of their anti\u2011car agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The battle is a repeat after last year when Queens Supreme Court Justice Chere\u00e9 Buggs torched an earlier 31st Street redesign, ruling DOT acted \u201carbitrarily and capriciously\u201d by barreling ahead with protected bike lanes without proof it had conferred with local firehouses.<\/p>\n<p>The city is appealing that ruling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is absolutely mind\u2011boggling how the city can come back with the same plan and say that it\u2019s safe after a judge ruled against it,\u201d fumed Joe Mirabella, president of the 31st Street Business Association, which sued over DOT\u2019s first bike lane scheme on 31st Street.<\/p>\n<p>He said his group of mom\u2011and\u2011pop shops and neighborhood residents can\u2019t match the legal muscle and funding of the city in the ongoing dispute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not some bunch of corporations or mega\u2011property owners,\u201d Mirabella said. \u201cIt\u2019s cost us a lot of money to bring this into court. We won and now the city refiling.
