We want to drive out the last Russian fighters who have taken refuge in a camp,\u201d Mohamed Ramdane, a spokesman for the Tuareg rebels said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>A local elected official confirmed the fighting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, Sunday, fighting resumed in Kidal between the Malian army, the Russians and the (Tuareg) rebels. Residents heard gunfire. There\u2019s shooting,\u201d the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>Kidal, a Tuareg stronghold, was retaken in November 2023 by the Malian army backed by Russia\u2019s Wagner paramilitary group, ending more than a decade of control by rebels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The FLA also claims to have taken positions in the northern Gao region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe aim of the attackers was not to seize and control cities, but to carry out coordinated actions in order to at least capture Kidal, which is a rather powerful symbol,\u201d a security source told AFP on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Mali has been ravaged for more than a decade by conflict and jihadist violence but Saturday\u2019s attacks were the worst since 2020, when the junta seized power.<\/p>\n<p>They took place on the fringes of the Malian capital Bamako and in several towns and cities across the sprawling Sahel nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Residents on edge \u2013<\/p>\n<p>The fighting left 16 civilians and soldiers wounded and caused \u201climited material damage,\u201d the government said in a statement on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>It added that \u201cthe situation is totally under control in all the localities\u201d that were attacked.<\/p>\n<p>In Bamako, soldiers were stationed Sunday morning around a clinic in the city where Defence Minister Sadio Camara was admitted the previous day, according to a medical source and witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>According to residents, the minister\u2019s residence in Kati, a neighbouring town of Bamako and a stronghold of the ruling junta, was largely destroyed by a powerful explosion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Camara\u2019s aides denied he was wounded.<\/p>\n<p>In the capital, access to military facilities has been blocked by barriers and tyres on the roads, an AFP journalist said.<\/p>\n<p>In the outlying district of Senou, where the airport is located and which witnessed heavy fighting on Saturday, the atmosphere was jittery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still hear the blasts ringing in my ears. It\u2019s traumatising,\u201d a resident said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kati was calm after \u201cthe jihadists left the area, but we are living in fear,\u201d a resident told AFP on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>United Nations chief Antonio Guterres condemned \u201cacts of violence\u201d in Mali.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Secretary\u2011General is deeply concerned by reports of attacks in several locations across Mali,\u201d his spokesman said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Secretary-General calls for coordinated\u00a0international support to address the evolving threat of violent extremism and terrorism in the Sahel and to\u00a0meet urgent humanitarian needs,\u201d spokesman Stephane Dujarric added.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s Africa Corps, an organisation under direct control of the Russian defence ministry, has taken over from the mercenary Wagner group in helping Malian forces fight jihadists.<\/p>\n<p>Mali has resources including gold and other valuable minerals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mali\u2019s rulers, like their military counterparts in neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso, have severed ties with former colonial ruler France and several Western countries, moving closer to Russia.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
