But I know he has. I just know it in my heart. I could feel it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Timothy Jones Jr. admitted to killing his five children, ages 1 to 8, in their Lexington County, South Carolina, home in August 2014.<\/p>\n<p>He drove with their bodies in his SUV for nine days before dumping them in five garbage bags on a hillside near Camden, Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>Jones Jr. was later arrested at a traffic checkpoint in\u00a0Smith County, Mississippi,\u00a0after an officer smelled an odor of decomposition, The Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n<p>His case is now being examined in an episode of Investigation Discovery\u2019s (ID) true-crime series, \u201cEvil Lives Here: My Child the Killer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It focuses on parents forced to confront the unthinkable, that the children they raised and loved have become capable of monstrous acts.<\/p>\n<p>Before the murders came to light, Jones Sr. said he hadn\u2019t heard from his son.<\/p>\n<p>Then came a call from his grandchildren\u2019s school, concerned about their absence.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Timothy Jones Jr. admitted to killing his five children, ages 1 to 8, in their Lexington County, South Carolina, home in August 2014. <span class=\"credit\">FOX News<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When he reached out to one of his son\u2019s friends, he learned that Jones Jr. hadn\u2019t been seen in the previous day or two at work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the\u00a0police officer\u00a0called me from Mississippi,\u201d said Jones Sr. \u201cI tell him, \u2018I just want to make sure he is OK and the children are with him.\u2019 He said, \u2018What children? There are no children with him. We found a little bit of blood in the car, and we\u2019re having it checked. It could be animal blood.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Panicking, Jones Sr. begged to see his son. At the trial, authorities testified that they allowed the meeting, hoping a face-to-face confrontation might break Jones Jr. and reveal what had happened to the missing children.<\/p>\n<p>When Jones Sr. entered the interrogation room, he was stunned by what he saw. He said it was like staring at a wild animal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s just a blubbering mess,\u201d said Jones Sr. \u201cI\u2019d never seen this person before. I didn\u2019t know that boy. But I just wanted to know where my babies were. I love you,\u2019\u201d said Jones Sr. \u201cHe was going to put his hands around my throat. He never did. He just sat back down and started crying. But I just didn\u2019t have a good feeling. I\u2019m trying to get him to tell me anything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne cop got p\u2014-d off a little bit, jumped up and said, \u2018There\u2019s a substantial amount of blood in that damn car. I want to know what the hell is going on.\u2019 I just looked at him in shock, like, \u2018What? You just told me there was a little bit of blood, and you were going to test it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones Sr. offered to go with his son to find the children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI begged him, \u2018Son, please, those children are out there by themselves with animals,\u2019\u201d said Jones Sr. \u201cHe told me, \u2018You can\u2019t go with them.\u2019 I said, \u2018That\u2019s fine. But how could he? What man could possibly do this to their own children?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones Sr. remembered his son as \u201ca good little boy\u201d who grew up without his mother.<\/p>\n<p>Raising him on his own, Jones Sr. worked multiple jobs but still made sure to be there, fixing him breakfast, taking him to school and spending long afternoons by his side.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jones Sr. remembered his son as \u201ca good little boy\u201d who grew up without his mother. <span class=\"credit\">FOX News<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But, looking back, there were signs that something wasn\u2019t right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was just a normal boy,\u201d said Jones Sr. \u201cI didn\u2019t have any trouble with him until he was about 9. Then he shot the neighbor in the back of the leg with a BB gun, which I got him for Christmas. He had this little puppy that he slapped and swore at. It seemed unusual. But I talked to him about it, and we never had that issue again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0high school, Jones Jr. became increasingly angry, worrying his father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe got in a few tussles and got into arguments,\u201d said Jones Sr. \u201cBut I thought it was no more than any other teenage kid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2001, Jones Jr. was charged with a crime spree that included burglary, car theft and forged checks. He was sentenced to seven years in prison. When Jones Jr. was released, he was seemingly a changed man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe used to go to church,\u201d said Jones Sr. \u201cBut when he came back [from prison], he\u2019s all hell-bent on living by the Bible. I told him, \u2018Son, I understand what you\u2019re trying to do, but you\u2019ve got to remember, the Bible is the guideline of life. You can\u2019t follow every rule in there because you can contradict yourself, and it\u2019s just too tricky.\u2019 But he was convinced that that\u2019s the way it was going to be.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Raising him on his own, Jones Sr. worked multiple jobs but still made sure to be there, fixing him breakfast, taking him to school and spending long afternoons by his side. <span class=\"credit\">FOX News<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI went to church with him a few times,\u201d he said. \u201cHe would get up and act crazy. I didn\u2019t expect it. I almost felt like he was\u00a0in a cult. He was talking in tongues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones Jr. married Amber Kyzer in 2004. The union was highly tumultuous, especially in the years leading up to the killings. The relationship deteriorated into a contentious custody battle, with Jones Jr. having primary custody. They divorced in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the beginning, he was a great father,\u201d said Jones Sr. \u201cSeemed like a good husband. We would do everything we could to help with the kids.\u00a0But when they divorced,\u00a0I just thought, \u2018My God, it\u2019s going to be really hard for one man with five children who has to work.\u2019 We really wanted to help. We tried.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI pleaded with him, \u2018Let us help you. You have family who could help. I\u2019m here.\u2019 But all he said was, \u2018It\u2019ll be all right.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jones Sr. said he would reach out to his son, hoping he could see him and the kids. <span class=\"credit\">FOX News<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On their last Christmas night together, the two men got into a heated argument.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me how I never loved him, never cared for him,\u201d said Jones Sr. \u201cNow, at that point, this had been going on many, many times. He would tell me how I didn\u2019t love him. I finally said, \u2018I gave up my life for you, raised you by myself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did everything I possibly could. I tried to give you the best life I could. How am I a bad dad? What did I do? Tell me what I did now, and maybe I can fix it.\u2019 And he just said, \u2018I never want to see you again. You can go f\u2014 off.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A jury convicted Jones Jr. of five counts of murder and sentenced him to death. <span class=\"credit\">FOX News<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jones Sr. said he would reach out to his son, hoping he could see him and the kids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember he said, \u2018Would you like to talk to the children?\u2019 Now I was supposed to see him the next day. So I said, \u2018You know what, Timmy? Let\u2019s surprise them. They\u2019ll be really happy because they loved coming over to \u2018papa\u2019s big house,\u2019 as they called it. I built a pool and everything for them. But the next day, he went missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s always been my biggest regret, not speaking to the babies one last time,\u201d he tearfully said.<\/p>\n<p>During the trial, Jones Jr.\u2019s defense team argued that he suffered from\u00a0mental health\u00a0issues.<\/p>\n<p>Defense lawyer Boyd Young claimed the prosecution ignored evidence that proved Jones Jr. was insane. However, prosecutors maintained that Jones Jr. knew what he was doing.<\/p>\n<p>The jury convicted him of five counts of murder and sentenced him to death.<\/p>\n<p>Jones Sr. said he hasn\u2019t spoken to his son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just can\u2019t,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m falling apart. I\u2019ve lost my business. I damn nearly lost my home. I knew he was sick. But after the trial, he called and just acted like it never happened. I\u2019m here falling apart, and he\u2019s just laughing, giggling. I couldn\u2019t do this anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones Sr. admitted he will always carry guilt with him for the rest of his life. He still wonders what he could have done to help his son and grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no way I cannot blame myself,\u201d he said. \u201cThose babies should be here. I should have done something before it went too far. I knew he was going to have a hard time with five children. I knew all these things. I should have done more.
