height: 750px; background: #ccc; display: grid; place-items: center;\">\r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e2\" data-zoneid=\"5876678\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  \r\n  <script async type=\"application\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.magsrv.com\/ad-provider.js\"><\/script> \r\n <ins class=\"eas6a97888e6\" data-zoneid=\"5876682\"><\/ins> \r\n <script>(AdProvider = window.AdProvider || []).push({\"serve\": {}});<\/script>\r\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>They\u2019re not pumped.<\/p>\n<p>Long-suffering NYCHA residents called for the city to focus on bread-and-butter fixes for their crumbling, stinky homes \u2014 as Mayor Zohran Mamdani touted a $2.5 billion plan to provide heat pumps and other green tweaks to public housing.<\/p>\n<p>The eco initiative that Mamdani highlighted in a splashy Earth Day announcement Wednesday would put energy-efficient water and lighting systems in 45,000 apartments, add new heating pumps into 20,000 homes, install 10,000 induction stoves and provide 150 public electric vehicle charging stations in NYCHA parking lots.<\/p>\n<p>But many residents at the Woodside Houses, where Mamdani rhapsodized about protecting the planet, said they wanted the city to deal with other nagging \u2014 and gagging \u2014 issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a smell in my apartment from the trash compactor \u2014 it smells so bad, I throw up every day,\u201d said Jennifer Lambert, 50.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday outlined $2.5 billion in green upgrades for NYCHA homes, including heat pumps. <span class=\"credit\">Paul Martinka for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The NYCHA \u201cSustainability Agenda\u201d released by Mamdani\u2019s administration quietly slips in that the five-year plan is projected to cost nearly $2.5 billion, of which $1.2 billion has yet to be found.<\/p>\n<p>The agenda, which aims to fulfill its green goals by 2031, is a continuation of green energy policies and benchmarks set under Mamdani\u2019s predecessor, Mayor Eric Adams, for the city\u2019s largest landlord.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani in February also promised to spend $38 million to bring heat pumps \u2014 an all-electric, efficient appliance that provides both heat and air conditioning \u2014 to the Beach 41st Street houses.<\/p>\n<p>The pledge followed a pilot program that brought 150 heat pumps into the Woodside Houses last year. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Maria Lopez, 73, was one of the residents who received the fancy heating and cooling units \u2014 and she hasn\u2019t looked back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t suffer like I used to, when it got so cold in my apartment that I had to have to plug in a heater and sleep next to it,\u201d she said. \u201cOnce they installed this unit, forget it \u2014 it was amazing to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But many of Lopez\u2019s neighbors \u2014 including Lambert, the resident who said she pukes daily from the garbage stench \u2014 complained that the heat pumps and Mamdani\u2019s other green fixes won\u2019t help the actual problems they deal with day-to-day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t fix things here,\u201d Lambert said. \u201cI appreciate getting better heat and air conditioning, but it\u2019s the small things.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Woodside Houses resident Jennifer Lambert welcomed the green upgrades, but said there were more pressing fixes. <span class=\"credit\">Paul Martinka for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>One building in Woodside Houses already has heat pumps providing efficient heat and air conditioning to units. <span class=\"credit\">Paul Martinka for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMy heating works. My air conditioning work. That\u2019s not the issue here. I care about the environment. I\u2019m for energy-efficient lights and EV stations. Green is everything, but I\u2019m sorry to say it\u2019s beside the point right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Maritza Lopez, 44, said she\u2019s happy for the upgrades \u2014 but she\u2019d prefer the money be spent on better security and exterminators to kill roaches and rats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re gonna give me a new unit that heats and cools, I\u2019ll take it,\u201d she said, \u201cbut then fix the broken pipes. Fix the boilers.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cOnce they installed this unit, forget it \u2014 it was amazing to me,\u201d said Maria Lopez about the heat pump. <span class=\"credit\">Paul Martinka for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lopez was among several residents who were baffled by the move to add electric vehicle charging stations to NYCHA parking lots, pointing out most residents couldn\u2019t afford even afford gas-guzzling cars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFancy appliances are nice, but the city\u2019s priorities are off,\u201d said Gloria Carter, 61. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got mold. I\u2019ve got tiles falling off the bathroom walls. My windows don\u2019t open properly. My walls need painting. I can\u2019t get anybody to fix these things,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the root of the problem \u2014 not efficient lightbulbs, not chargers for electric cars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Installing the EV charging stations at NYCHA\u2019s more than 100 housing developments is an apparent bid by the agency to generate revenue, including from taxis and for-hire vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur needs are fundamental, basic needs,\u201d Carter said. \u201cI\u2019m OK with heat and air conditioning. What I\u2019m not OK with is mold, cracks in the walls, hinges that don\u2019t open. Those are the kinds of things I need the mayor to invest in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t be spending all this money on stuff I don\u2019t need.
