Rice for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Firefighters discovered \u201cheavy fire\u201d on the first floor of the building, which is home to commercial businesses, FDNY Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods said at Tuesday night press conference.<\/p>\n<p>The flames \u201crapidly raced up the stairs\u201d and quickly lit each floor of the building ablaze \u2014 prompting firefighters to move \u201cvery aggressively\u201d to extinguish the fire on the first four floors.<\/p>\n<p>After reaching the top floors, the smoke-eaters realized the building was structurally unstable and were pulled to fight the flames from the outside, fire officials explained.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>After reaching the top floors, the smoke-eaters realized the scorched building was structurally unstable and were pulled to fight the flames from the outside. <span class=\"credit\">J.C. Rice for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ladder companies pulled up to the building to rescue tenants who\u2019d become stranded in the front and back of the building \u2014 including someone trapped in a window without a fire escape and multiple people stuck on a fire escape in the front.<\/p>\n<p>Two unidentified individuals were killed in the massive fire, the FDNY said. <\/p>\n<p>Two other people were brought to local hospitals with serious injuries, and five firefighters and four civilians suffered minor injuries, according to authorities.<\/p>\n<p>There was \u201cheavy, heavy damage\u201d to the building, Woods said, adding that the building\u2019s roof and stairwell had collapsed during the raging inferno.<\/p>\n<p>Woods said the building was not fireproofed and was \u201cvery challenging due to the amount of voids in this building, which is over one hundred years old.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The over 100-year-old building was not fireproofed and was \u201cvery challenging due to the amount of voids\u201d in the structure. <span class=\"credit\">J.C. Rice for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cToday, the Bronx faces yet another fire that has rose to a five-alarm. Twenty-six residential units here in this building on East 187th Street,\u201d Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd unfortunately, we lost two of our neighbors. Our hearts go out to those families and loved ones of the two victims in this fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gibson also commended the work of the city\u2019s first responders, adding that without their \u201cheroic efforts\u201d there could have been more fatalities.<\/p>\n<p>Residents affected by the fire are being encouraged to seek help at a reception center at Dodge High School.<\/p>\n<p>Engineers plan to evaluate the building\u2019s structural stability as it remains at risk of further collapse.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of the fire remains under investigation. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
