Hillary Scholten claimed her husband had a mental break just days before he abruptly walked out on her and their two teen sons, according to court papers that she tried to hide from the public.<\/p>\n<p>Scholten (D-Mich.), 44, made an unsuccessful bid in February to keep her divorce case sealed, with her attorney claiming the details could hurt her reelection chances and cause \u201cirreparable reputational harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The documents include the Grand Rapids-native\u2019s claims that her hubby of 20 years, Jesse Holcomb, had months of \u201cdepressive\u201d and \u201cmanic episodes\u201d before he \u201cunilaterally and suddenly\u201d decided to split.<\/p>\n<p>Just six days before Holcomb left, Scholten found him \u201cinconsolably crying\u201d late at night and refusing to eat food as he incoherently muttered \u201cabout his childhood,\u201d according to court papers filed by Scholten, which were obtained by journalist and podcaster James David Dickson.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The Democratic Congresswoman for Michigan, Hillary Scholten, claimed her husband had a mental break before he abruptly walked out on her and their two sons earlier this year.  <span class=\"credit\">@scholten4congress \/ Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Scholten \u2014 who is running for a third term representing Michigan\u2019s 3rd Congressional District in November \u2014 claimed she was \u201cunable to stabilize\u201d Holcomb and even considered checking him into a mental health facility, Pine Rest, the papers said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Scholten \u2014 a former social worker and immigration attorney in the Obama administration \u2014 said she told her sons, Wesley, 13, and, James, 16, that her husband wasn\u2019t feeling well.<\/p>\n<p>When Holcomb emerged from the bedroom at one point, the sons could tell there was \u201csomething off about their father,\u201d the filing claims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually, [Holcomb] returned to bed, again crying inconsolably,\u201d her papers claimed.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Scholten claimed just days before Holcomb left her, she found him \u201cinconsolably crying,\u201d court papers show. <span class=\"credit\">CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The next day Scholten brought up inpatient mental health treatment to Holcomb \u2014 a journalism professor at Calvin University in Grand Rapids.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThis suggestion only increased his irritability,\u201d her lawyer wrote. \u201cShe suggested they take a walk or go cross country skiing. It was virtually impossible to stabilize him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At Scholten\u2019s urging, Holcomb finally called a doctor and eventually started \u201ccoming out of his agitated state,\u201d the papers allege.<\/p>\n<p>Then Holcomb \u201csuddenly and irrationally\u201d told his politician wife that he was going to leave on Jan. 6, immediately exiting their home as his sons \u201ccried\u201d and before turning off the location services on his phone so she and the boys wouldn\u2019t know where he was staying, Scholten\u2019s papers claimed.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Scholten and Holcomb had been married for 20 years. <span class=\"credit\">@scholten4congress \/ Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the aftermath of the split, Holcomb showed \u201cerratic and threatening behavior\u201d toward the family, including \u201cambushing them\u201d at the airport when Scholten decided to have the boys accompany her to DC for work, the court papers claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Holcomb claimed in his divorce papers from January that Scholten was trying to keep him out of their Grand Rapids home by changing the locks and security system passwords and she was also trying to keep him from their sons.<\/p>\n<p>Scholten \u201chas unilaterally cut off contact between [Holcomb] and the minor children and restricted and denied him liberal access to the materiel home,\u201d his papers claimed.<\/p>\n<p>But Scholten countered that the boys personally texted him they weren\u2019t ready to see him because of the shock of him leaving and his alarming actions after.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The pair have two sons who are ages 13 and 16. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt was this behavior-and additional erratic, aggressive, and intimidating behavior in the ensuing days \u2026 and abrupt and thoughtless choice that puts [Holcomb] in the position he is in today with the children,\u201d her filing alleged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe children are not ready to see their father without therapeutic intervention,\u201d the documents claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Holcomb filed for divorce on Jan. 26, without telling Scholten, offering little explanation for why he was doing so, other than to say the marriage was unfixable, court papers say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been a breakdown of the marriage relationship to the extent that the objects of matrimony have been destroyed, and there remains no reasonable likelihood that the marriage can be preserved,\u201d his divorce papers alleged.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Holcomb is a professor at Calvin University. <span class=\"credit\">@scholten4congress \/ Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Holcomb \u2014 who makes $105,000 at his professor gig \u2014 asked for spousal support and for Scholten \u2014 who makes $174,000 in Congress \u2014 to be responsible for the costs of the divorce.<\/p>\n<p>She is fighting both requests.<\/p>\n<p>A judge in late February did issue a ruling ordering them to share custody and that Holcomb would live in the home and take care of the sons when Scholten was in DC for work.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Scholten is running a for a third term in the midterm elections in November. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The judge, Matthew Delange, also ordered the kids to undergo therapy, the court papers show.<\/p>\n<p>The divorce case is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have grown an extra chamber in my heart for moms and dads out there who have had to go through this,\u201d Scholten said about the divorce earlier this month. \u201cIt goes without saying that this is a deeply personal matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both of their lawyers didn\u2019t immediately return requests for comment Monday.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
