Thom Tillis (R-NC) over the confirmation of Kevin Warsh as the new Federal Reserve chair, On The Money has learned.<\/p>\n<p>Mind you \u2013 I\u2019m not sure how this high-stakes beef will pan out. I\u2019ve been covering Donald Trump for decades and I have a sense of when he\u2019s bluffing and when he\u2019s ready to fold. I do know that the president hates being dissed by anyone \u2013 including and especially a two-term senator.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That said, the latest is that Wall Street thinks that Trump \u2014 despite saying this week that \u201cI\u2019ll have to fire [Powell], OK, if he\u2019s not leaving on time\u201d \u2014 will blink.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><button Thom Tillis (R-NC) over the confirmation of Kevin Warsh as the new Federal Reserve chair. <span class=\"credit\">Jack Forbes \/ NY Post Design<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tillis, a powerful member of the Senate Banking Committee, says he won\u2019t agree to send Warsh\u2019s nomination to the full Senate (where Warsh would likely be approved on a party-line vote) because he thinks the White House\u2019s probe of Fed Chair Jerome Powell over alleged cost overruns on its HQ renovation is bogus, an attempt to usurp the Fed\u2019s status as an independent agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wall Street believes this principled stance and the fact that Wall Street wants an independent Fed will force Trump\u2019s hand \u2013 and it amounts to a bet that Trump will ultimately be rational. The last thing the president needs with midterms coming up, the Iran conflict and its disruption of oil supplies (sparking inflation), is for bond traders to start demanding higher interest rates on US debt because they think the White House will be controlling monetary policy and simply print money at will.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Charles Gasparino<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Plus, Tillis isn\u2019t budging. He recently told reporters it might be better for Powell to remain in his job on a temporary basis (which he will by law if Warsh isn\u2019t confirmed when Powell\u2019s term ends in a few weeks) than to have the president exert his influence over the agency. Removing Powell could spark \u201cmayhem\u201d in the bond markets and those dreaded higher interest rates Trump wants to fall to spur the economy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a matter of fact, the mayhem would be if we sent to the financial markets that the Fed serves at the pleasure of the president of the United States, any president of the United States,\u201d Tillis told Fox Business\u2019s Chase Williams. \u201cIt is an independent entity that needs to remain that way. His alleged over-spending on the new HQ, the so-called \u201cTaj Mahal on the Mall\u201d is proof of his incompetence, and he has vowed to fire the Fed chair for \u201ccause\u201d if he has to.<\/p>\n<p>Trump is pretty adamant about all of the above, though as we all know, he also is a dealmaker.
