Perdomo.<\/p>\n<p>It was a case SCOTUS stayed 6-3 in September, allowing ICE to use \u201capparent race or ethnicity\u201d language and work location to justify immigration stops in California.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is from a man whose parents were professionals and probably doesn\u2019t really know any person who works by the hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor speaks at an event at New York Law School on Sept. 16, 2025. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Supreme Court Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh attends the State of the Union address at the Capitol on Feb. 24, 2026. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Sonia Sotomayor attend President Donald Trump\u2019s Inauguration on Jan. 20, 2025. <span class=\"credit\">POOL\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In his concurring opinion on the Sept. 8, 2025 stay, Kavanaugh wrote that legal residents\u2019 encounters with\u00a0immigration agents\u00a0are \u201ctypically brief, and those individuals may promptly go free after making clear to the immigration officers that they are US citizens or otherwise legally in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sotomayor, who filed the dissenting opinion, alleged in her remarks at KU that Kavanaugh failed to grasp that even short detentions can have major \u201cfinancial consequences\u201d for hourly workers despite him citing the legal reasoning of immigration stops being longstanding and based on reasonable suspicion.<\/p>\n<p>She added her \u201clife experiences\u201d taught her how to \u201cthink more broadly and to see things others may not,\u201d seemingly in reference to racial profiling as the first Hispanic justice.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released by the Supreme Court Wednesday, Sotomayor said she \u201creferred to a disagreement with one of my colleagues in a prior case\u201d but \u201cmade remarks that were inappropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI regret my hurtful comments,\u201d she wrote in the statement. \u201cI have apologized to my colleague.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
