Mikie Sherrill bashed the \u201cinherited\u201d World Cup host agreement in which FIFA is absolved of paying for transportation to the matches at MetLife Stadium \u2014 and insisted she won\u2019t stand for its planned price gouging.<\/p>\n<p>NJ Transit plans to raise prices to a staggering $100 for fans traveling from New York Penn Station to MetLife Stadium for the eight\u00a0FIFA World Cup games\u00a0hosted at the Garden State arena.<\/p>\n<p>The average ticket goes for $12.90, marking an egregious 775% premium for all. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill called on FIFA to \u201cpay for the rides\u201d to MetLife Stadium for the World Cup. <span class=\"credit\">X\/@GovSherrillNJ<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While the rumored hike has \u201cnot been finalized,\u201d according to a NJT spokesperson, locals are already fuming \u2014 Sherrill included.<\/p>\n<p>Sherrill, who entered office at the beginning of this year, fumed that her \u201cadministration inherited an agreement where FIFA is providing zero dollars for transportation\u201d to and from the World Cup.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>She surmised that the hullabaloo will bury NJT under \u201ca $48 million bill\u201d as they are tasked with carting upwards of 40,000 fans to and from the stadium.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the haughty honchos at FIFA are set to make an estimated $11 billion off the Cup, so covering the transportation bill would only eat up an estimated .4% of their entire revenue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t stick New Jersey commuters with that tab for years to come. That\u2019s not fair. So here\u2019s the bottom line, FIFA should pay for the rides, but if they don\u2019t, I\u2019m not gonna let New Jersey commuters get taken for one,\u201d Sherrill said. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>New Jersey Transit tickets to MetLife Stadium will be hiked up to $100 during the World Cup. <span class=\"credit\">NYPCS for the New York Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>New York Sen. Chuck Schumer also criticized FIFA for \u201c[handing] the bill\u201d to the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe least FIFA can do is ensure New York residents can go to the stadium without being gouged at the turnstile. I am demanding FIFA step up and cover transportation costs for host cities and states. New York commuters and residents should not subsidize an $11 billion windfall,\u201d Schumer wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>New York Gov. Kathy Hochul boasted that prices won\u2019t be inflated on the MTA, though she appeared to forget that not one MTA train or bus travels to the East Rutherford stadium.<\/p>\n<p>Parking passes on the stadium grounds are also going for $225 apiece. The American Dream entertainment complex said that it partnered with FIFA to sell a \u201climited\u201d amount of general parking in its section of the MetLife lot.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>FIFA has not historically provided money to cover transportation to World Cup matches. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even if the price point is resolved, New Jersey-bound commuters will still be barred from the NJ Transit portion of Penn Station during select times on game days \u2014 with six out of eight shutout hours falling during rush hour.<\/p>\n<p>Fans in other host cities aren\u2019t faring any better. Those attending matches at\u00a0Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts face $95 tickets on the buses operated by Yankee Line.<\/p>\n<p>FIFA, though, likely won\u2019t budge, since it hasn\u2019t historically funded local transportation to any World Cup match. <\/p>\n<p>In early March, the Trump administration announced that it would funnel $100.3 million \u201cto enhance public transportation\u201d in the host cities ahead of the Cup.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The US has not hosted the World Cup since 1994. <span class=\"credit\">Christopher Sadowski for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The funds are supposed to \u201csupport planning, capital, and operating expenses\u201d for the matches and other related events in host cities. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not immediately clear how much was appropriated to New Jersey, or how the funds were divvied up.<\/p>\n<p>The World Cup has only been hosted in the US once before. <\/p>\n<p>The 1994 World Cup was split between arenas in Washington DC, Boston, Orlando, Chicago, Dallas, East Rutherford, Detroit, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. <\/p>\n<p>Anywhere from four to eight matches were played at each arena. Seven took place at MetLife Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>The cup was marred by unseasonably high temperatures that tormented fans and players alike.
