Chait \u2014 who\u2019s filling in for Aberto Carvalho while Carvalho faces a federal probe \u2014 isn\u2019t sure where the district is going to find the money for the massive pay raises, the Times reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a very good question, obviously,\u201d Chait said during a press conference on Tuesday.\u00a0 \u201cIn making these commitments to our labor workforce, we\u2019re looking \u2026 to always start internally and look at where our dollars are going.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The cost of the mammoth pay increases to the three unions is nearly $1.2 billion. <span class=\"credit\">David Buchan for California Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI know there\u2019s been a lot of dialogue around subcontracting, around using internal services. Critics and allies alike questioned how the district would pull this off, the report noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy hunch is that the only way the district will be able to come up with the money is to lay off lots of people, unless they have been hiding money, which I don\u2019t think is the case,\u201d Pedro Noguera, dean of the USC Rossier School of Education said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Acting Superintendent Chait said Mayor Bass will look to Sacramento for help.  <span class=\"credit\">CHRIS TORRES\/EPA\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey have lost over 200,000 students over the last 15 years and haven\u2019t downsized the number of employees or schools. The union had been without a new deal since June 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Two other unions, UTLA and the one that represents administrators, reached tentative deals with the district on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>LAUSD\u2019s agreement with UTLA, which represents about 37,000 teachers, nurses, counselors, psychologists and librarians, gives teachers a 14% raise over a two-year agreement.
