by ICE for nearly two days was actually relaxing at a hotel getting spa treatments, according to a $1 million defamation suit filed by a county sheriff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>US citizen Sundas \u201cSunny\u201d Naqvi, 28, gained national attention last month when she and a band of supporters \u2013 including Cook County, Ill., Commissioner Kevin Morrison \u2013 publicly insisted she was unlawfully detained by ICE officers for roughly 43 hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Naqvi claimed that after landing back in the US from a work trip to Turkey on the morning of March 5, she was detained for nearly 30 hours at Chicago O\u2019Hare International Airport, then transferred to another ICE facility in Broadview, Ill., before winding up at Dodge County Jail in Wisconsin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Surveillance footage shows US citizen Sundas \u201cSunny\u201d Naqvi, 28, visiting a gas station during the time friend\u2019s sister,\u201d shared questionable screenshots of Naqvi\u2019s location at the Juneau, Wisc., jail on Facebook \u2013 and decried the alleged incident during a tense media conference alongside Naqvi\u2019s sister March 8.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a 28-year-old girl just left on the street by ICE in another state, without her property,\u201d the commissioner said. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>He claimed Naqvi was released from custody in the early hours of March 7, then hitchhiked nine miles to a hotel, where she was met by family.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Homeland Security called the claims \u201cblatantly false\u201d \u2013 and even posted surveillance footage from the airport showing Naqvi entering a secondary inspection zone that morning and leaving around an hour later.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Wisconsin Sheriff Dale Schmidt is suing the woman and others, claiming defamation. <span class=\"credit\">FOX 32 Chicago<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMs. Naqvi departed CBP within 90 minutes of her arrival to the United States\u2026[she] was not taken into custody or transferred to ICE for detention,\u201d DHS wrote in a March 10 X statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Dodge County Sheriff\u2019s Office also said it had no record of Naqvi ever \u201cbeing booked, detained, or released\u201d at the local jail.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Morrison, who is running for a seat in Congress, doubled down \u2013 even accusing the officials of \u201clying\u201d and \u201ctrying to create a cover-up,\u201d according to the Wisconsin outlet WISN 12 News.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now Naqvi and Morrison are the subjects of a federal defamation lawsuit filed by Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt on Friday \u2013 as his office released new details of Naqvi\u2019s actual actions during the alleged hoax period.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe checked into the Hampton Inn and Suites in Rosemont, Ill., for the entire duration of this alleged event,\u201d Schmidt said during a press conference, where he presented a hotel bill and text receipts to illustrate Naqvi\u2019s time there.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Gas station surveillance footage showed Naqvi brazenly wearing the same clothes that she\u2019s later seen sporting in a \u201creunited\u201d checked in at the Hampton Inn \u2013 just a 10-minute drive from the airport \u2013 at 1:17 p.m. March 5, while text messages with an unidentified witness over the following days show she enjoyed free food, spa services and trips to the gym.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay I use ur card to order some food\u201d and \u201cgoing to check out the gym in like 5,\u201d read texts from Naqvi to the witness, according to authorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay i use your card to pay my spa lady?\u201d another says in screenshots released by the sheriff\u2019s office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The witness told cops he also drove Naqvi to a nearby gas station in the early hours of March 7.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Surveillance footage taken from that outing revealed Naqvi brazenly wearing the same clothes that she\u2019s later seen sporting in a \u201creunited\u201d picture uploaded to Facebook just hours later, according to the sheriff\u2019s office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The accused lair checked out of the hotel on the afternoon of March 8, the folio shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Though Wisconsin authorities were not able to bring criminal charges in this case, Schmidt is seeking justice through the lawsuit, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Schmidt is requesting a jury trial and seeking damages no less than $1 million per defendant \u2013 including 10 \u201cJohn Does\u201d \u2013 who he said caused \u201creputational harm\u2026particularly as he prepares for a re-election campaign in 2026.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff\u2019s lawyer Sam Hall, told The Post the lawsuit is \u201cultimately about accountability.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis lawsuit was filed because a completely fabricated story was pushed into the national spotlight by Naqvi and Cook County Commissioner Morrison,\u201d Hall said. \u201cUnfortunately, their claims were treated as fact without the most basic verification.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSheriff Schmidt is standing up to demand accountability against those who perpetuate lies and fake news.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Naqvi could not be reached for comment. and Morrison did not respond to inquiries.
