Eric Swalwell suspending his campaign for California governor on Sunday after a slew of sexual assault allegations was essentially the same \u2014 what took so long?<\/p>\n<p>Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host and leading Republican candidate in the race, said his exit was inevitable and questioned why he entered the contest in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just shows you the disgusting arrogance of these career politicians \u2014\u00a0they have\u00a0total contempt for the voters, assuming they can do whatever they want and get away with it,\u201d Hilton told The Post via email.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Eric Swalwell has dramatically suspended his campaign for California governor after shocking claims he sexually assaulted multiple women. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images for California Environmental Voters<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEven worse is the sickening hypocrisy of the Democrat elite in California,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hilton alleged prominent Democrats and labor groups were aware of the situation, claiming endorsements and financial support continued despite what he described as an \u201copen secret on Capitol Hill and Sacramento.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>He specifically criticized Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Adam Schiff, teacher unions and the SEIU, accusing them of \u201cfake outrage and condemnation.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Steve Hilton said Swalwell\u2019s exit was inevitable and questioned why he entered the contest in the first place. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia is ruled by a corrupt Democrat cabal that is collapsing into chaos, sleaze and scandal,\u201d Hilton said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Swalwell Stink is on the entire corrupt Democrat machine in California.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rusty Hicks, chair of the California Democratic Party, issued a statement to The Post saying that Swalwell had \u201cfinally done the right thing by ending his campaign for Governor.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Rusty Hicks said that Swalwell had \u201cfinally done the right thing.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSwalwell\u2019s reprehensible actions confirmed he is unqualified and unfit to seek or hold public office in California,\u201d Hicks said in a statement. \u201cI hope that Swalwell is held accountable for his actions and the courageous victims and survivors who have come forward receive the justice they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Swalwell\u2019s name cannot be removed from the June 2 primary election ballot, so Hicks said he is calling on Democrats to avoid voting for the congressman because \u201che is unfit for public office and receives as little support as possible at the ballot box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assemblymember James Gallagher, a Republican from Yuba City who\u2019s running to succeed the late Rep. Doug LaMalfa in the House, said he was \u201ccurious\u201d what Swalwell intends to do after suspending his campaign.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The congressman admitted to \u201cmistakes in judgement in the past\u201d but issued another defiant rebuttal of the allegations leveled at him. <span class=\"credit\">Bloomberg via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI hope it means he\u2019s quitting the campaign, but next he needs to resign from Congress,\u201d Gallagher said. He added, \u201cAnd if he doesn\u2019t resign, I\u00a0believe he\u2019ll be kicked out along with Rep. Tom Gonzalez.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gonzalez, a Republican from Texas, is being investigated by the House Ethics Committee over sexual misconduct allegations, according to Axios.<\/p>\n<p>Gallagher said that Swalwell\u2019s supporters could break out across the crowded field of Democrats still in the race.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here\u2019s the latest on the allegations against Rep. Eric Swalwell<\/h2>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p>\u201cWe could be looking at the top two being Republicans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Eccentric billionaire Stephen Cloobeck, who has spent more than $1 million supporting Swalwell\u2019s campaign, was so sickened by Swalwell\u2019s actions that he told The Post on Sunday he is quitting the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cF\u2014ing tell everyone I\u2019m a libertarian,\u201d Cloobeck said in an exclusive interview. \u201cF\u2014 you, Democrat Party. Because I think their politics are closer \u2014 they overlap with Swalwell\u2019s more than any of the other candidates,\u201d Gerston said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s also Xavier Becerra and Betty Yee, but they\u2019re so far down the ladder [in the polls].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason McDaniel, a political science professor at San Francisco State University, said that Swalwell\u2019s suspension shows that Democrats took the allegations seriously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe practically unanimous calls by Democratic Party leaders for Swalwell to drop out show that they found the reported accusations to be very credible, and that the alleged behavior is unacceptable to Democratic Party officials and voters,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a sign of party strength and is a stark contrast to the way that the Republican Party has often responded to similar accusations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
