Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) to end his California gubernatorial campaign \u2014 but not resign from Congress amid shocking sexual misconduct allegations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing the incredibly disturbing sexual assault accusations against Congressman Eric Swalwell, we call for a swift investigation into these incidents and for the Congressman to immediately end his campaign to be California\u2019s next Governor,\u201d read a statement issued by Jeffries and House Democratic leadership.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is unacceptable of anyone \u2013 certainly not an elected official \u2013 and must be taken seriously,\u201d the statement continued \u2013 stopping short of demanding that Swalwell step down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A former congressional staffer accused Swalwell, who had been the Democratic front-runner in the Golden State governor\u2019s race, of sexually assaulting her on two occasions when she was too intoxicated to consent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries got blasted for his statement that did not demand Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell resign from Congress amid sexual misconduct allegations. <span class=\"credit\">Andrew Schwartz \/ SplashNews.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>CNN also reported that several other women alleged sexual misconduct ranging from unwanted touching to unsolicited nude pictures by Swalwell.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Jeffries\u2019 statement was met with outrage on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat an unprincipled, meaningless statement,\u201d former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer wrote on X.\u00a0\u201cIf they thought Swalwell did wrong, they should call on him to resign.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Democrats say [Swalwell] is too toxic to run for office, how is he not too toxic to currently occupy his office?\u201d Mike Davis, the founder of judicial advocacy group Article III Project, wondered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a post directed at Jeffries, conservative podcaster Graham Allen fumed, \u201cYOU ARE A COWARD.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries issued a statement calling on Rep. Eric Swalwell to drop out of the gubernatorial race \u2014 but not Congress. <span class=\"credit\">X\/Hakeem Jeffries<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMAKE HIM RESIGN\u2026\u201d Allen demanded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brett Tolman, a former US attorney and the head of nonprofit group Right On Crime, described the Democratic leader\u2019s statement as \u201cdownright comical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet out of the Governor race but you can stay in congress #SortaMeToo,\u201d Tolman quipped.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) called on Swalwell to resign and argued Democrats should do the same.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIdk in what parallel universe we are living in that elected members of congress begin to [choose] politics and party BS over basic human dignity,\u201d Luna wrote on X. \u201cI have called for Republican members to do the same when they are caught doing corrupt and morally bankrupt crap.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>California Rep. Eric Swalwell, who is also running for California governor, has been accused of sexual misconduct by several women. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cDem leadership needs to do the same.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) announced that she would be introducing a privileged resolution on the House floor next to censure Swalwell.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis behavior is disgusting and unbecoming of a Member of Congress.\u201d Boebert raged. \u201cIt\u2019s past time to answer for your actions you disgusting pervert.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Swalwell, a married father of three children, has denied the allegations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese allegations are false and come on the eve of an election against the front-runner for governor,\u201d he said in a statement to CNN.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor nearly 20 years, I have served the public \u2013 as a prosecutor and a congressman and have always protected women,\u201d the congressman added. \u201cI will defend myself with the facts and where necessary bring legal action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy focus in the coming days is to be with my wife and children and defend our decades of service against these lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also issued a video statement denying the allegations Friday evening, while also apologizing to his wife Brittany Watts, saying he\u2019s made \u201cmistakes in judgment in my past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut those mistakes are between me and my wife, and to her I apologize deeply for putting her in this position,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
