Ribeiro for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The iconic 44th Street site will close temporarily over the summer for renovations, 71-year-old owner Max Klimavicius told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Shubert reps have already vowed to preserve the century-old charm of the Great White Way\u2019s watering hole \u2014 including its more than 1,200 quirky portraits of its past and present clientele from Barbra Streisand to George Clooney, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The beloved caricatures alone were collectively appraised in 2020 for nearly $7 million, he said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe Shubert acquisition of the restaurant will ensure its continuity: they\u2019re not in the restaurant business, it\u2019s the theater business,\u201d Klimavicius, who plans to retire later this year, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThem becoming the owners and the custodian of this legacy guarantees the next 100 years,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sardi\u2019s will continue service through June 24 under Klimavicius, after which it will close for a several months-long \u201crefresh\u201d of the front-of-house, plus ventilation and plumbing upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>Klimavicius contends the restaurant\u2019s old-school banquettes will also remain intact, and Shubert will keep the Sardi\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe character of the restaurant is not going to change at all \u2013 I mean, the flavor and the ambiance \u2013 people are very concerned about that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very rare these days that an institution like this will continue with the same character.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Klimavicius contends he was \u201cpromised\u201d the restaurant\u2019s old-school charm will remain intact \u2013 including its beloved caricatures. <span class=\"credit\">Max Klimavicius \/ Sardi&#8217;s<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sardi\u2019s initially launched as \u201cThe Little Restaurant\u201d in 1921 under Vincent Sardi Sr. and his wife Eugenia in a nearby building owned by Shubert Organization, reps said.<\/p>\n<p>The current location on 44th Street opened in 1927, and has since cemented itself in Broadway history as the birthplace of the Tony Awards and the site of countless luxe after-parties.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant\u2019s portrait collection started under a Russian artist, Alex Gard, \u2014 who was promised two meals a day in exchange for drawing caricatures of guests \u2014 in a tradition that continues to this day.<\/p>\n<p>Klimavicius, who arrived from Colombia and began working at Sardi\u2019s as a kitchen assistant in 1974, bought the business in 2007 when the original owner\u2019s son, Vincent Sardi Jr., died in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>The dining room received renewed interest this year \u2014 and an onslaught of media attention \u2014 with the release of Oscar-nominated movie \u201cBlue Moon,\u201d which takes place inside Sardi\u2019s, Klimavicius said.<\/p>\n<p>At first, \u201cI didn\u2019t really know what Sardi\u2019s was about,\u201d the owner lamented to The Post, \u201cbut over time, I fell in love with this place. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis love affair still continues to this day. I just can\u2019t tell you how important this is to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The storied dining room opened in 1927, and has since become cemented in Broadway legend. <span class=\"credit\">Max Klimavicius \/ Sardi&#8217;s<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While he\u2019s gotten other offers from other entrepreneurs to continue the Sardi\u2019s name, the owner contends the Shubert Organization was the clear choice from the start, as \u201ctheir role is to protect and safeguard this loved institution that is so rare these days in New York.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis wasn\u2019t about the money for me,\u201d he said. \u201cThis has been my life, and what is important is that the legacy continues forever.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Regulars who had learned of the news flocked to Sardi\u2019s Sunday afternoon, recounting legendary late-night tales told over its white tablecloths.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Regulars who had learned of the news flocked to Sardi\u2019s Sunday afternoon. <span class=\"credit\">Luiz C. Ribeiro for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI used to come in here for lunch all the time with actors,\u201d said Upper West Sider Elizabeth Marner-Brooks, who recalled the myriad discount lunches received by showing her Actors Equity card.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProducers, directors, would come here at intermission, on opening night,\u201d Marner-Brooks, 81, added. \u201cIt was just such an iconic place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manhattanite Annette Pica told The Post that the 44th Street institution made the Big Apple feel like a \u201csmall town\u201d where \u201ceverybody knows everybody.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope they really don\u2019t change too much, because they will lose,\u201d the 66-year-old retired nurse said, but acknowledged \u201cyou have to move on to a new generation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, the food is okay, but it\u2019s really the atmosphere,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the pictures are just fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \u603b\u5bb9\u5668\uff1a\u6700\u5927\u5bbd908px Grid\u7d27\u51d1\u5e03\u5c40 -->\r\n<div style=\"display: grid;
