I\u2019m worried about my city. Jewish and Israeli businesses are vandalized, attacked and viciously targeted.\u00a0Jews are being targeted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSynagogues, including Park East Synagogue that I\u2019m a member of, was recently overwhelmed by an angry mob surrounding it.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Hungarian-born Holocaust survivor Roth with her husband, Joseph, and son Peter, who now runs a skincare label.   <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of the Roth family<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAnd the mayor doesn\u2019t support rules to protect it from the mob,\u201d she said about the recent buffer zone bill, stopping people protesting too close to houses of worship, which was approved by the City Council.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Zohran Mamdani has so far not taken a position on the bill but said he is \u201caware of the serious concerns \u2026 raised regarding these bills limiting New Yorkers constitutional rights,\u201d according to CNN.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s dangerous,\u201d Roth added, blasting the hostile climate she said is exacerbated by the anti-Israel mayor.<\/p>\n<p>Roth, nee Karola Szanto, was the youngest of six children, and found herself on a cattle car destined for Auschwitz before the tracks were blown up.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Roth was placed in a cattle car which was destined for Auschwitz and also a work camp outside Vienna, Austria, by the Nazis. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of the Roth family<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Roth warns of New York, \u201cI don\u2019t recognize my home of more than 75 years,\u201d especially with the rise in anti-semitism. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of the Roth family<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With the current alarming spike in antisemitism around the world and in her backyard, Roth warns, \u201cThis is reminiscent of how it all started in the 1930s and 1940s in Hungary,\u201d noting the infamous March 1938 Anschluss that formally aligned Germany and Hungary.<\/p>\n<p>That led to anti-Jewish laws which severely restricted Jews from the workforce and further classified Jews as a racial group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd ended with me and my mother, two sisters, brother and relatives being trafficked by the Nazis in a cattle car to a work concentration camp near Vienna.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe survived forced labor and being starved with almost no food, no bathroom and only a lake to bathe in when it wasn\u2019t frozen,\u201d Roth said of the inhuman conditions that she suffered for nine months.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Mayor Zohran Mamdani hasbeen presented a buffer zone bill to etablish a protected area around houses of worship as a measure to prevent against any attacks. <span class=\"credit\">William Farrington for NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYou never knew if we would be shot and killed for not obeying the Nazis. I was determined not to give up and we barely survived until we were liberated,\u201d she said, emerging a skeletal 85 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>Recalling her beloved older sister, Magda, and her five children who were murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz, Roth draws on the lessons of the Holocaust to make sure \u201cNever Again\u201d isn\u2019t simply a slogan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one believed it until it was too late and totally out of control, as many of us lived in a bubble then and still do today,\u201d said Roth, who worked with her late fellow Hungarian husband, Joseph Roth, on his jewelry business and becoming a model for the brand of her skincare guru son, Peter Thomas Roth.<\/p>\n<p>The bon vivant, who parties like a teenager, usually goes to bed around 3am and wakes up afternoon. She celebrated her birthday last week with a catered fete with 75 friends, including tennis legend Martina Navratilova.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Roth pictured with a beloved pet. It\u2019s human nature to be afraid of getting old, but she shows the possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As she primps for her birthday party \u2013 or even dinner out \u2013 Roth will look in the mirror and say, \u201cI look gorgeous,\u201d said Ryan. \u201cAnd she means it. She\u2019s a bitch \u2013 but in a good way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the current climate and hostility towards Jews looms large for his grandma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sad part of all of this is that it\u2019s the first time we\u2019re seeing it, but not the first time she\u2019s seeing it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>For Roth herself, she\u2019s steadfast about vigilance and being a proud Jew, even in difficult circumstances.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re easy targets.
